Marrying in the United States

Hello,

I am new to the forums and am seeking some advice regarding my situation. I am an American citizen who has permanent residency in Canada. I currently work in Canada and live with my fiancee (she is a Canadian citizen). I only go back to the states to visit family on holidays.

We've decided we wanted to get married in the states so it's easier for my family to attend the wedding but we're not really sure if there is any legal stuff to worry about. We only plan to marry there, and then head back to Canada since we both live and work here. So a few questions: If we marry in the U.S., would it be recognized in Canada as well? Do we need to file any paperwork?

Thanks kindly in advance.

A marriage outside of Canada will be recognised by Canada if it was done lawfully. I got married in Australia to my wife for the same reason (for family to attend) and the only paperwork we had to worry about was the legal stuff in Australia to register.

Once you get back, if anyone requires proof of your marriage you would present the marriage certificate issued in the applicable American state. There is nothing to "register" your marriage in Canada if it did not take place here.
