My boyfriend lives in the us and i live in ontario and we've been dating and seeing each other for the last three years and we are planning to get married in January and I want to get him sponsored. How do I do this? does he book a one way? what is the process and how long does it take before he gets his permanent residence? Can he stay while in the process of getting his permanent residence? What are the next steps to getting his citizenship?

thank you in advance

Generally the fastest way to apply is outland - thankfully your boyfriend can stay in Canada during this time.
You need to be married first before you can sponsor. Are you getting married in Canada? My husband came with a one way ticket. He explained he was visiting his girlfriend and he hadn't decided exactly when to leave. The border agents can give you 6 months in this country, but if they suspect that you may stay longer, they may request you leave in a shorter amount of time. They rarely will deny entry, but if they believe that you are not going to leave the country when your status expires, they could. My husband was given 6 months. Once you are in, you can apply for an extension here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/extend/visa.asp

Thankfully, sponsoring an American is pretty simple as marriage fraud is very rare with that country. But ensure you have proof that you have a genuine relationship. My husband is American and the proof we showed was tickets to all the times he's visited, receipts for all gifts, pictures of us together before, during and after the wedding, joint bank accounts, joint utilities, joint leases, having him as a beneficiary, etc. You honestly can never be too careful.

Here is the application page. Read all of it carefully. There are guides that show how to fill it out. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/fc.asp
We sent in EVERY part of the application. Pages that didn't apply to us (use of representative, dependents, etc) we just wrote a line through and wrote N/A, just so our application was complete. You don't have to do this.
Pay your fees, then send off.

Currently the wait time for the United States (assuming Ottawa is the processing centre) is about 15 months, so expect to have to extend your boyfriends stay possibly more than once. That time doesn't guarantee that it will be exactly 15 months. When we applied it was 14 months and we were finished in 7 months.

I hope this makes sense.

Yes we are going to get married in Canada. Thank you for the information I really do appreciate it. How long does it take to an obtain a permanant residency..15months? When will he be able to work? is it possible he could have joint accounts with me even though he isn't a citizen yet? Also what is 'outland'? I am very new to this. Sorry.

15 months average after you apply, yes. During that time he cannot work. There are basically two ways to apply. Outland means that the applicant resides outside of Canada. It is generally faster and you can appeal if you are denied. The nice thing about outland is that your husband doesn't actually have to stay out of Canada. My husband was already here when we applied.
Inland is another way.
Inland is actually around the same time right now. Inland means that the sponsor is in the country, and it is not advised they leave during the processing of the application. The upside to this process is that after the sponsor is approved (which takes about 6 months), the applicant can work, provided they send an open work permit application with the initial application. However, if you are denied for whatever reason, you cannot appeal.
Outland is the most popular for Americans.

TD Bank is one bank I know of which will allow you to have a joint account with someone who is not a citizen. My husband and I got a joint account through them before we got married.

I also forgot to mention - once he gets his permanent residency, citizenship is about 4 years away. But as a permanent resident he can work and have access to health care.

No problem! It's a lot of work and seems daunting at the start, but it isn't so bad. :) Just read read read and don't be afraid to ask.
