I didn't like flying Air Canada because of that meal and drink garbage. But I stopped flying on them entirely when they introduced that "bring your pet with you" thing.

Ya Manila/Vancouver direct and then you would change to a domestic carrier from Vancouver to T.O.

You are right. Not sure where he got the idea that it is direct from manila to Vancouver. The plane has to refuel somewhere. He can fly Vancouver/Toronto direct.
When they first introduced the MNL-YYZ route they did go without stopping. My guess is that they ended up with 2 half full planes so they changed to this arrangement. As for fuel, that isn't a problem. I usually fly Cathay Pacific and they go YYZ-HKG no problem.

Wow...didn't think they could go that far without refueling.

Anyone have any opinions on cell phones? I have always used a Crackberry and the wife has a Samsung I think. I want to get us on a family plan and just wondering about changing to an iPhone or whatever phone is the most reliable and user friendly.

I don't like flying with PAL. Tried it once and may never do it again UNLESS it's business class.

I'd choose Air Canada or Cathay. But make sure to check Air Canada's baggage restriction - I know they only allow 1 for economy.

Personally I would do the HK stop over. You will have to clear customs in Vancouver which could take a while.

As for the baggage, I believe it is whatever the first airline restriction for the whole duration. I flew Cathay from Cebu to hk and ac from hk to Vancouver before coming to Ontario. My baggage restriction was the Cathay one because it was my first flight .

One thing about hk, if you are switching airlines you will need to get your boarding pass at the airport. Also it is wise to keep a printed copy of your e ticket with you as you may need to pass through a security checkpoint with it as you have not got your new boarding pass.

As far as I know you do not deplane in Vancouver if you are going on to Toronto, so there should be no slow-down. The whole trip is 17 hours 50 minutes.

And HK airport is kind of annoying in that the flight from Manila comes in in one "wing" of the airport, then they make you walk all the way to another one, AND go through another security checkpoint and change floors. That is the only thing I am worried about if I send my wife that way. It isn't a big deal but I think she will be so nervous and excited she may get lost, or not know where to go. That makes the direct PAL flight much easier.

For me, Cathay is the only way. I've flown them now 10 round trips no issues.

1 time I flew Delta because Cathay had no flights and it was last minute...way too many stops/layovers took 31hrs

flew Air Canada 3 times, and all three times the flights were delayed. Once I even had a 12 hour layover in Japan because of the strike they were on at the time.
