So I (Canadian citizen by birth) am sponsoring my husband (Austrian) to come to Canada, outland through the Vienna office.

Seems like we may have made a mistake with the medical exam - instead of saving it for last, it was actually the very first thing we did and we greatly underestimated how much time it would take to complete the rest of the application. So, I will be sending our application out in a couple of days, but our medical exam will expire about 6 months into the process.

Should we do another medical before sending it in (there is about a 2 month wait with the one doctor in Vienna who is able to perform it), or wait to do another one until after we've sent the application in with the old medical? Is it better to send the new medical in before the old one expires, or wait and see if they request a new one? We want our application to be processed as quickly as possible (of course) and are trying to avoid any delays. Is it common for them to request a new medical if the old one expires during the process? If they request a new one, will it prolong our application?

Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!

The medical should be 3 months or less, when it is mailed out and received by CIC. If it is older than 3 months right now, then u will have to do another one to send with your application. Once CIC has the medical, it only expires one year from the date you had it done. If the process takes longer than that then the visa officer may advise you to do another medical exam, but you will have to wait for them to let u know.

If your medical is currently less than 3 months old, then u will be fine to mail off the application in a couple days.

I'm looking at the guide here and I don't see anything that says the medical has to be less than 3 months old. It does say that about the police background check but not the medical - can you link me to a place where I can see that information? I will be absolutely destroyed if we have to wait 3 more months for something like this... :(

i must be confused then, sorry.

But the medical will be valid for 1 year from the time you get it done. If your process takes longer than 1 year and the medical expires, then the visa office will let u know and give u instructions on getting a new one. In certain circumstances, the vo can have the medical extended an additional 3 months. It is not something to worry about, just get the application sent off as quickly as possible and remember that the posted times for the visa offices is usually worse case scenario, and usually many applicants finish before the posted wait times.

Send you package .Your police record can not be more than 3 months . The Vo can extend your medical to the amount of time they wish . It is up to them to decide if they wish to extend or send you for another medical . Don't delay sending your application mine was 4 months old when i finally sent it off .

There is no such rule. You are confusing the rules for medicals and the rules for police certificates.

Ok, phew!!! Was about to have a nervous breakdown there, hahaha. So I see the VO can extend the medical if they choose, which is good! How likely is that, given that we have a fairly straightforward case that should be easy to process? Is it safer for us to just do a new medical sometime before the old one expires and send it in before they ask for it just in case?

Our relationship is very obviously genuine with lots of proof (we had to cut pack over 800 pages of skype records and had hundreds of photos to choose from, and our relationship is common knowledge among our friends and family members), he has no criminal history at all, and he is coming from a visa exempt country that has better social assistance programs/universal health care (dental care is covered by the government! how awesome is that!) compared to Canada, so we are not concerned about them questioning our relationship at all. Does that make a difference in whether or not the VO will decide to extend our medical?

When my husband and I got our stuff sent in I'd had mine done 6 months before (had to redo the fingerprints or everything would have been sent in before then) so you're fine to send it in now. If they need to have you redo the medical they'll ask, or they might extend it for you (mine was extended for 2 months to give me time to land)

medicals are good for 12 months, and CIC has the ability to extend them another year as long as they are done within 15 months. do not get another medical unless it's specifically requested by CIC, otherwise there will be confusion with connecting the exam to your application. My medical exam was done roughly 6 months before sending in the application, and there was absolutely no issue with approval. in fact, CIC extended them for a few weeks on my approval paper so i can land. Send in everything as is, and wait and see how it turns out.
