Hi there! I've been a live-in caregiver here in Canada for 10 months now. The thing is I just found a new job in Toronto area(my job loation right now is out of Toronto and there are no bus here on weekends). I have a family in Toronto so I want to live closer to them and my work hours here are too long. I start at 7-7:30 in the morning and I get done at 9 or 10 pm. But my concern right now is how do I tell my employers I am resigning? I am willing to give them a 1 month notice as stated in my contract. Please help!

Don't worry about it. Just send them email or talk in person.explain your situation that you want to live closer to your family! Have you started LMO process?

Not yet but my new employer wants me to sign the contract on Sunday. They understand that I haven't told my current employers yet that I am resigning. It's just that I am too intimidated to talk to them and tell them I'm leaving.

I also want to know when do you think is right time to tell them?

I did not tell my former employer until my new employer received LMO. Then I gave them 1 month notice. You never know how long LMO process will take. I did not want to lose much time.

Thank you for your advice sveti28. Although staying with them longer is not an option for me right now. I do love the kids here, which actually made me decide later than sooner, but it's a really big house and they have 5 kids and as I've mentioned above, I work from 7-10. And on some weekends the husband and wife go out overnight and I watch the kids but I never get overtime pay. I didn't want to complain about it but I just hope that they won't be immature or something when I tell them I'm leaving. My new employer would like to talk to them too for reference and I'm scared that they won't give me a good one.

Take your time. Be positive when you talk to them. Say how much you love your job, kids and live in their house. Dont complain about anything.
I think 10 months working for them is good sign. it says that you are a good worker , reliable
In my case I told my new employer about my situation and they wont get any good reference from former employer. I left it up to new employer to decide to hire me or not. I was really worried about it. but it turned out well!

If the contract is not being followed, then you have all the right to leave. They are violating the law for not paying you overtime rate. Ten months is more than enough to serve them with those very long hours. Wait for your new LMO to arrive, get assurance from new employer then give proper notice as declared in your contract.

Thank you Ronaldonyx. Everything's fine now. I knew the contract wasn't being followed but I stayed because of the kids as I've come to really love them. My new employer and I will discuss and sign the contract on Sunday. I know it was a lot of money with all those overtime pays I missed but I choose to just look forward now. :)

You got a genuine heart serving them then and it would be a big loss for them if you leave. Anyhow, ask all your doubts with your new employer so you would be in a better position. Have a good one!
