I totally agree with you, and I think that those who are trying to rationalise whatever comes their way are making a huge mistake. The minister in question as well as his boss have to wake up and smell the coffee...I am still waiting for Harper's CLEAR explanation about the senate scandal! Oh, and Canada Post too...us2yow said:

But in reality, it shouldn't even take a year. Not even half a year. If the UK & Australia can do it in less than 6 months, then there is no reason why Canada cant do the same.

Electioneering in full swing now...lets wait for the Federal Budget on Feb 11th, 2014 it will indicate what goodies are in store for all of us and to get a better view of where citizenship/immigration reform fits in. All the noise around a balanced budget by 2015 which surprise is when the elections are due.
Overall the Feds just need to get enough votes in Ontario and Quebec for a slight majority or failing that a minority government. It would be something if the powers that be come out and said "read my lips - the speed of citizenship processing in Ontario and Quebec has absolutely nothing to do with any forthcoming elections".
Its a no brainer to fix the process: hire more staff especially CJs, go for a pre application test approach (subject to rigid controls to eliminate fraud), mandatory filed taxes submissions, pre-application biometrics, residence = physical presence only except federal/military service, track exits. Fees need to go up too - it costs more to go watch a hockey/football/baseball etc game including refreshments than it does to get Citizenship eh!

yeah with all the scandals and messes lets see how much they remain in favor after all the damage they have done. Change will be very good and much needed !

The opposition has to keep second guessing the Feds who have at their helm a proven winner - you lose power its not others that win it is the danger of hubris befalling politicians! Its going to come down to the economy.....the Liberals left a huge surplus...its no more...that would be my opening salvo but I guess the young man at their helm has his cards close to his chest...are they aces one wonders??

As for the Cons they are outdoing themselves in becoming increasingly unreasonable, short-sighted, rude, and divisive, making this place look worse by the day.
I guess when you are nervous and afraid and know deep down that you are basically messing with (aka screwing with) the lives of everyday Canadians and to-be Canadians ;D it is very easy for them to become all of the above described unflattering qualities. Yikes ! not a pretty place to be I hear - The Govt these days.
As for the Cons
