Hi guys,

My wife (who is currently residing with me in Canada as a visitor) and I plan on leaving Canada for a few days to go to the US in March. If, hypothetically, at that time, we are still waiting for her PR card to arrive, would we be able to leave and re-enter Canada with no problems, even without her PR card in her hands?
To add a bit more detail: she is from a visa exempt country and we applied outland.

Thanks

Even if she werent from a Visa exempt country, She could easily apply for and get what is known as a Permanent Resident Travel Document.

Driving across the border is no problem.

If flying the airline will demand to see a valid PR card or PR Travel document to be allowed boarding.

Thank you for the replies.

We will be taking a plane, so it seems like the only option is to apply for that PR travel document. Do any of you know how long they typically take to process?

Once in the US, she will need to mail her passport and the PR TD application to a US visa office. I believe she can choose from LA or New York or Washington DC. Once they complete processing, they will mail her passport with PR TD back to her address in the US. Or if you happen to be going to one of those cities you can arrange to drop off and pick up in person.

I would budget a couple of weeks for the whole process. Make sure your timing is not urgent, since she will basically be stranded while they have her passport and while it may be a quick process, there may also be unexpected delays.

This assumes of course she isn't a US passport holder in which case no PR TD would be required.

Thanks Rob,

I suppose another option would be to wait to do her landing until after we arrive back from the US in March? That would depend on how the long the CoPR would be valid for, though, correct? How long are CoPRs typically valid for?

Thanks again!

The COPR is typically valid for approx 1 year from when she did the medical exam. So for some people that gives days/weeks to land, for others that gives many many months.

But definitely if she gets COPR, you can then travel to the US on your trip and she can do PR landing on the return flight home.

Cheers again, Rob!

My wife's latest medicals were done June of last year, with her passport expiring in July of 2018. I'm really hoping her CoPR is valid until June.

But of course, I don't even want to get ahead of myself. We just got PPR not too long ago, and who knows how long the CoPR will take to arrive. All I'm hoping for is smooth, easy sailing.
