Thanks...wat abt crockery....any suggestions? r u taking crockery from here or wat?
We are taking crockery and cutlery too. Just pack crockery piece by piece tightly in the cloths. Make sure there is no loose space, means the hard items should have cloths in between and they cannot strike with other crockery item. Pack crockery+cloths in a "hard" suitecase/trolly bag not a flexible one, chances of breaking while shifting by crew is likely. Some experienced person suggested to put crockery in hand carry (only China Clay or Glass ones, no metal item), someone suggested hand carry are not weighed precisely? so you may carry a little more as well, we are thinking on this too. As far size on bag 162 or 62, let me check again. For hand carry I am sure of size but for Checked luggage stick to weight more than size. Get a Spring Balance or other means to weigh do not rely on usual Bath Room Scale, these are deceiving.

Those who are planning to bring crockeries from back home specially Asia, you can compare the price with Canadiantire http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/8/KitchenBath.jsp?locale=en. If you buy on sale, it might be same or little bit higher price to your home country.

You can bring clothes, shoes, bed sheet, towels, under garments and condoms ;D. These are very expensive here.

Bringing bed sheet from Asia is probably a bad suggestion because the sizes of North American beds are different (unless you also bring bed from Asia!). If you buy on sale, they might be lower price than your home country.

Good crockery is expensive here.
16 peice bone china dinner set (4 cup 4 bowl 4 big plate and 4 small plate ) we bought for 89 $ .

Cheapest avilable from 29$ .

Cutlary also approx 40$ for 4 set (20 pcs)

12 cooking Utensils set we bought from zellers closing sale for 199$ 12 pcs (which was otherwise priced $ 499.
)

Bed sheets. - best to bring from India/pak -Asia
But check bed size as here they are single ,Double , Queen and King .

King size bedsheet are very expensive here .

These are light weight item and could save u more then half price compare to u buy here .

Canada is unnecessary expensive even if compare to UK , EU and US.

Again do bring all medicen which you think u may need in near future.
If you even spend INR 5000 ($90) in medicen (few common antibiotics. Like amoxelin for adult and childern , Anti bacterial and anti fungal cream , pain killers like crocin , dependal , combiflame , itch gaurd ,
Multi vitamins , vit D ,family planning , etc etc. ) you will be better off .
Go and check with Dr there that what you can need in future.

If you get chance to use just 15% of those medicen thats also worth.

I just bought $ 30 Iron pills (150 pills for 3 month), $ 42 anti fungal cream (30 gm tube which is 20 rs in India) , $ 36 antibiotics suspansion amoxelin (100 ml which is 30 rs in India) for my daughter .
Parecatemol and Ibufrobin for 25$ (crocin and combiflame max for 100 rs in India)
Vitamen D drop for baby $ 30 (2 month dose ) , for daughter $18 and for us vit D tab $ 30 (150 vit D tab )

And these all when we are healthy family (iron pill recommended to wife after delivery. Fungal cream for me when i scratch my leg and got red scar and amoxelin when one day my daughter feeling little poly ). So no serious health problem.

We are family of four and bringing lot of stuff like extra clothings, undergarments, summer shoes, crockery, cutlery, bed linen, towels and kitchen utensils etc, that's why we have excess baggage. As I am coming through Emirates which allows one suitecase of 23kg and one 7kg standard hand carry with ticket, and for an extra 23 kg suitecase I was asked to pay 250 USD from Islamabad to Calgary. I will need almost 3 to 4 suitecases to fill in my extra luggage.
I got a good deal from DHL, they are taking my 100 kg extra luggage from Islamabad to Calgary in 630 USD.
This way I am saving on shipping cost, cost of suitecases, since I need to take all items without packing and those will be put in Carton provided by DHL (and extra suitecases will be of no use after reaching Canada) also cost of bringing them from Airport to home since DHL will deliever at the door step.
I am taking necessary items with me on the Flight and this extra luggage will reach once we are relatively settled in the house.

If you got real bone china for $89 you got an amazing deal.

Just going to put this out there - and by no means am I trying to be discouraging or disrespectful to any of the posts here about low income housing....

However, if you aim for low income housing, you will end up in the crappiest neighborhoods in Calgary. Ones with highest crime, drug addicts, and violent people. Not to say you can't end up with loser druggies as neighbors in nicer areas...... grrr. It's more to say when you shake the bag, the smallest pieces of trash tend to settle in the bottom... if that makes sense.

Guys, if paying low income housing makes it able to give your kids better food and clothing, then yes. But don't stay there. Once you're established and have a good job, get out. Because if you live in a trashy neighborhood, your KIDS will grow up thinking that's normal.

Come on guys.....I am sure you are leaving your country to have a better life. I believe that if you qualified for the FSW you should have enough English and Education to qualify for a job that could support you and your families. For this reason, try your best and forget about the government help.

Canada offers many opportunities to be successful, so don't use the Government.

Just saying....

Do not miss your existing expensive Crockery, I know we all are fond of keeping fancy Crockery in our homes. Take them at fisrt priority, if you think it is less, can buy more as well. But do not get away with the idea that you need to buy all new things for a new country. Save money, you will have ample chances to spend money in Canada :D.

No direct flights from Asia (except Tokyo):

http://www.calgaryairport.com/

Best to contact airline for details. Generally, you can choose either stay inside airport or arrange accommodations yourself.

Yes, it's okay to use the friend's address. Your friend can mail you the PR card overseas. Not a problem. If they do require in person pick up, well, there's no way around that. Luckily, that doesn't happen often.

Hello amikety and dear friends
what should we do if we are requested to collect PR card in person while we are not in Canada?
Thanks

As far as I know, the initial PR cards are usually sent by post.
