Just for fun (I'm bored guys, was it obvious?) I did a job search on "information technology" on www.monster.ca. Here is what I found:
http://jobsearch.monster.ca/jobs/?q=information-technology&cy=ca&where=calgary__2C-ab
261 jobs fit the bill. Now, some of these won't be IT jobs, they just slipped in because I used the word technology.
This website has even more www.wowjobs.ca
http://www.wowjobs.ca/BrowseResults.aspx?q=information+technology&l=CALGARY%2c+AB&s=r&sr=0&t=30&e=&si=A
A total of 1305 fit the search perameter "information technology" in some way. I browsed through the first page and they seem to be actual IT jobs for the most part.
Even if we decide only 1/4 are true IT jobs, that's still over 300. I would hazard to say that's pretty good. As I've mentioned before, though, 6 months is an acceptable amount of time to be looking for a job. To help yourself out, make sure you have a good cover letter, resume to Canadian standards, and a nice black or gray suit with a tie and long sleeved shirt, preferably freshly pressed. If you're okay with shaving, consider having a clean shaved face. It makes you look younger and employers don't want 'old' employees (because you retire sooner, thinking from back in the day when people stayed at one job for 20+ years. If shaving is against your religion or personal ethics, then don't do it.... not worth it for any job!)
Sites like Monster.ca will offer other tips as well. They also have sample cover letters and resumes to help guide you.
Lastly, Alberta isn't as set into using English spellings versus American spellings. Most people and places use American spells (center, meter, color), but some especially government jobs use English (centre, metre, colour). I don't think it matters which you pick in Alberta. I spell 100% with American spellings (they make more sense) and I don't have any issues.
