Sheriag... it's a government thing, not a company thing... you need to have 900 hours (i think) accumulated before you are entitled to the full 50 weeks (there's a 2 week waiting period)... it's basically only about 4 or 5 months of full time work... at that point you are entitled to an unemployment benefit... even tho you are still employed, your employer puts you into a state of employment pergatory (you are not an active payroll employee, but your position is "held" and you accumulate senority, keep your dental/drug coverage ect... ).. so you are entitled to unemployment, but not held to the requirements (submitting proof of job search ect), you are also allowed to leave the country and still collect (i spent 7m in jamaica)

with your "unemployment" benefit you get up to $434CAD (after tax) dollars per week from the gov't (depending on your income, if you take in more than 40k then you will likely get the full amount), some employers top up to your full salaray (gov't does, my company does not)...

more info than you asked i'm sure, but it's a great system that we're lucky to have... i have a friend in gov't and every time a woman goes on mat leave, they come back pregnant (remember they get full top up and they work the duration of their pregnancy and it more than covers the minimum hours... nice, no?)...

my daughter was born in the GA, USA and i only got 13 (completely unpaid) weeks leave... california is a progressive state which offers 18 weeks... but in Sweeden (edited... not switzerland) you get between 18 and 24m... so it's not the best out there either... :)

Yes Chelley, quite detailed...truly great system...Thanks for the info....
Not greedy at all one yr is more than enough!! ;D ;D]
One last question, in the event that you get pregnant before the 4-5 mnths what happens then?

Canuck: i truly understand....soon get it anytime, anywhere :P :P

it's the amount of hours you have in total before you go on leave... you can go into a job 4m pregnant and still qualify for the leave if you carry to term...

Found this... It was discussed earlier in forum....

you can also split 35 of the weeks with your husband/partner in whatever way you'd like...

Sheraig, don't kill that chyle playing in the snow .... it's easy to catch bad colds when u first first move from yay hot weather to yay cold weather.

Start boosting up on ur immune systems and be healthy and strong as u possibly can for when u will be hitting that cold. I used to get lots of bad bad colds during the winter months that required me to use high dosages of strong antibiotics for the first 2-3 years I lived in Canada. I am all good now. Hope it doesn't hit me again when I return back.

Oh, one thing that did help me boost my immune system was ColdFx. Never believed in it until my granny almost beat me to drink it... lol .... not really into taking all sorts of pills to cure things but sometimes your body becomes so weak and feeble that you have to take dem damm pills.

In the winter months I try to do my regular exercises and on top of that I use lots of fresh frozen berries (wait, I guess that wouldn't be fresh anymore) and fruits high in essential vitamins in smoothies that I make at home or I go to the juice store and buy me a shot of wheat grass which I find is very good.

I used to drink this smoothie mixed with spinach leaves, blueberries, raspberries, yogurt and orange or fruit juice ... used to look gross was tasted a lot like slimy calalu leaves ... LOL .... it was a great daily fibre intake for the body. Oh, not forgetting my flax seed I used to mix in a glass of water and drink whenever I remembered.

Confused: my baby is a winter baby...trust mi....I'm more worried for myself and mi hubby.
The last time I took her to New York in the cold she was a trooper...u should have seen her parents..total embarrassment. :(

Its children on a whole though, when my friends brought their kids to Canada in the winter...the kids were out there going crazy...making snow angel and all these things!!!

U have kids Confused?....most adorable things ever! ;D ;D

Awww, that's soo cute Sheraig. Yes, kids are just more hyper and active then us old folks ... LOL .... they tend to adjust to the cold weather more then anyone does. When we think they are cold and freezing their behinds off, they are loving every bit of it while we worry ourselves for unnecessary things.

I am only 23 yo and NO hun, I have no kids. At times I want to have kids but then I don't know if I can manage with raising one. We too are a gay couple so if kids are involved we will need a carrier or surrogate, not even sure what you call those people. Or better yet, adopt a kid or two from a poor area in the world. Or, I can have a one night stand and knock up someone and have that person get preggy for me but that's just wrong.

I guess I still have a long way in life to go before I come up with a final decision for kids..... gawd, u just made me felt OLDDDD :D

Oh....yeah...forgot for a moment...my bad!! ::)

Yup, you are pretty young.....you'll figure it out.... :)
