You will be required to take your passport to the interview or submit it before the interview depending on the correspondence that you received.

My wife mailed the application on Oct 7 2017 and we are yet to receive an acknowledgement of receipt. Is this the normal wait period after mailing the application?

It took just over a month to get the email of receipt and request for police clearance letter. Seeing that there was a holiday there could be a delay. You can contact CIC to ask what dates they are currently working on.
