Hi! I became a canadian citizen on the 20th September. I'm getting married in October so was planning
on waiting to apply for a canadian passport as I plan on changing my last name. Would there be any issues
with waiting till after marriage/name change to get a passport?

Also! Would I need to apply for a new citizenship certifiate with the new last name? I plan on just assuming
my husbands last name, so would I just keep the certificate with my maiden name?

LPP marked as complete on 2024/09/24.
Status updated on 2024/09/26.

Received Invite for Oath ceremony on 2024/09/26 which is scheduled for 2024/10/08.

I am concerned with this date as I have to travel to Mexico for work via USA on 10/20. I might not be able to get the passport by then. :(
Any suggestions experts and experienced folks?

Oh and by the way, my VO seems to be Scarborough as the the email address contains SCR.
maverick1982 or hssrp: Can either of you please update the tracker with my progress.

Well, you can apply for urgent passport as soon as you get the e-certificate. If you have flight booked, show the details of your travel and you can probably get the passport on the very next day. You have 8 business days so it's possible.
BTW, my oath is also on 8th, is it virtual for you?

Thank you. Can you please point me in the direction as to how I can have the Oath ceremony postponed. Like I said earlier, Oath is on 10/08 and I have to travel for a week on 10/20. I am afraid I might not be getting citizenship certificate and passport within the 8 working days.
Or is there an expedited way of getting passport.?

Rescheduling Oath ceremony can add unpredictable delays. It really depends on officer/office. You can either do that, or as the other profile said , you can try and apply for urgent passport by showing the travel itinerary.I will let @hssrp suggest. There were two other people in June group who had to reschedule Oath

@skonduru - You have sufficient time so don't have to reschedule oath.
If you have in-person oath, you would get the paper certificate right away during your ceremony. If it is virtual, you can let them know during your ceremony about your travel plan and they would prioritize and issue your e-certificate the same day.

With your certificate in hand you can walk-n the same day or next day to Passport office. They have urgent and express options. Urgent is for next business day and express is if you need it in 2-9 business days. Take your flight tickets and any other documents you have related to your travel (hotel bookings etc). They will issue the passport accordingly. Urgent is $110 extra and express is $50 extra on top of regular passport charges.

You can also request reschedule of your oath by replying to the oath invite email but it can unnecessarily delay your application, as some office reschedule within a week of return and few are waiting for months! Also note that re-schedule of oath is also at the discretion of the IRCC officer and they sometimes do not entertain such requests.

I have a US visa on my indian passport. Once I surrender the indian passport abd get Canadian passport, I'm assuming I just take both passports and say that i am canadian citizenship and show uscis copy? Don't think I need to do anything else. The Ibdian passport will be cancelled and can't be used for travel

Thats correct, Canadian passport doesn't require a US visa on it. You just show the USCIS approval copy and Canadian passport at the land or air border to US CBP and they issue the I-94 and appropriate non-immigrant status like H1, L1, B1 etc., accordingly (just for clarity to others: no physical stamps now, but I meant I-94 online :) ).

I am assuming you have a Business/Travel (B) visa. That visa will not be required anymore to go to the US. In your first trip to US, you should carry all your old and new passports just to be safe. In general, a visa remains valid till the visa expiry date on a cancelled passport since visa is issued to an individual and not to a passport.

If you are moving to US with an H or L visa, you’ll only need to carry the new visa approval letter (I-797) with you along with the new passport.
