I have provided details regarding the cost of living in a different thread.

http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/-t30711.0.html

Getting a survival job in quebec is very difficult without being fluently bilingual. Occasionally you might come across call center openings which requires fluent conversational skills in english. I am not sure about MBA or comp engg jobs...keep looking at monster canada, jobboom, workopolis and you might get lucky :)

I have met people happily settled in Montreal without much french skills...at the same time I have met people struggling to make ends meet...i guess a lot of hardwork and a little luck is needed.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hello Shahi,

To help you with your queries, I think i can provide you with my own experience (being a computer engineer and have lived in Montreal, QC for more than 1 year now).

So assuming your background, i think you would prefer to live and work in an English community. So there are only handful of places you can do your job search. (Areas of Montreal where english speaking community lives (West mount, West Island, Atwater, downtown area )). Small cities like Lennoxville has also 90% English speaking community. They also hire computer engineers. Best way is to look into their local newspapers (contact local recruiters, they can sometime find you jobs faster). craigslistDOTca, monsterDOTca, a very good website where you can find jobs related to IT industry tailored for new immigrants is (wwwDOTjobs4canadaDOTcom). Also quebec government has their own job banks only for immigrants and they help you initially finding jobs in Quebec.

But computer related jobs mostly require english speaking professionals so language should not be a problem.

Major companies where computer engineers can work in quebec are:

1- Bombardier (they look for controls, system and computer professionals)
2- Pratt and Whitney
3- Ericsson Canada
4- IBM (with their canadian head office in Montreal)
5- Telecom and Mobile providers (Bell, AT&T)
6- CMC (Microprocessor, VLSI desingers)

Now living expenses vary hugely based on where you live. Montreal is most expensive in QC. You have to pay min 400 CAD / mth rent for a shared apartment + food + transportation + mobile etc. So I would suggest you to live on sharing bases, cook at home and don't use cellphone for your initial stay (cost can be bring down to a min 600 CAD and can go upto min of 1000 CAD/month (based on canadian standards)).

Now again these costs are in montreal downtown, if you chose to live far from downtown and use a bike for transportation cost can go further down. I know some people who live within 400 CAD / mth (everything including:)

i hope this answer your question.

thanks

I am going to ask for a change in the interview date. Aug 13 I have something more important at work to do.

Any idea if this would be ok to do ? I read in the interview letter that says one rescheduling is allowed.

Thanks

yes once you have agreed...but i read somewhere that you can ask for rescheduling only once.... but this might delay your process..

Hey everyone,

I sent a fax request to change my CSQ interview from 13 Aug to 24 September. And I received an interview confirmation for 24 Sept today in email from Quebec Immigration. I am really impressed with Quebec's prompt response :)

Now, one thing that is killing me : French, French and French. I am at best beginner's level, and have no clue how to handle french interview :'(

Is there anyone who knows a good online french ? i am using Pimsler French CD to prepare now.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks

Hey, we did not go to an interview, but I know from other people that Pimsler is really good, a guy once told me that he passed first 40 lessons and that was all the french we brought on the interview.
Concentrate on it as much as you can and best of luck to you!

I have Pimsleur 1 - 5 beginner's CD. Do you have the advance level ? Is there anyone who has advance level french lesson (mp3 version). i would appreciate if someone could send me as email attachment.

Many thanks

hello mr Engi
I think using CD are not sufficent to learn french. You should know the syntax of the language and should practice with your friends. so I recommend you to join french class or visit www.about.com
good luck
