Hello,

I need a suggestion.

My boyfriend's English is not so good. We are planning on moving to Toronto, Canada at the beginning of next year, It all depends when I get my PR.

I want him to study English and at the same time to get a job where he can practice his English and become more fluent.

What could be the options for a beginner? And how long do you think it will take for him to learn English?
He has a basic to moderate knowledge of this language, he struggles a little with the speaking part.

Thank you

Hey, I'm guessing he's the spouse on your application so you both get pr at the same time?

I want to suggest he gets a job to ease him in but on the other hand I may suggest to plunge in the deep end. A job in a busy retail store would work wonders. It's somewhere where there isn't a huge amount of stress on the worker in terms of deadlines and has a huge amount of short interactions exposing him to lots of accents etc. I once hired a girl from Peru who could just say hello in English, after a month working in my busy shop she was almost fluent!

I thought about that, work in a not so busy retail store.
He is my boyfriend, from Chile. I am applying under the EE system.

He will apply for a work permit under the International Experience Canada Program.

Can you not add him as common law now and both get pr together?

How bad is his English? If it's really bad then he will struggle to get any job that involves speaking to customers since most companies will be reluctant to hire someone their customers can't understand well. He should at least have a good standard of English before going for these jobs.

Retail and waiting would give him good exposure to users of the language. He could also consider taking English lessons for adults.

Yes, he is going to take english for adults. I believe he will struggle at first, but later on he will make it.

We don't live together, so he can be my common law partner.

Any job, that requres some interaction with co-workers, will force him to learn the language.
What he might try to avoid is job inside his language community. That is all.

On the other hand, his English could bring you some points for application.

You could ask him to start reading English news, watching English programmes with subtitles and try to speak with people in English as much as he can.

I second this. What country are you in now?

There are a lot of free English as a Second Languages courses online (www (dot) esolcourses (dot) com/ for example). I know many people who have learned a foreign language and said it helped them a great deal to watch familiar movies they knew word for word in English (the most common type of movie? Disney. Apparently Beauty and the Beast and the Lion King works wonders!).
