Remedicals completed: 15th January 2021
GCMS notes were inconclusive until now. My view: GCMS notes are useless if your application is submitted cleanly. Unless you have faked any details in your application or missed out on some critical disclosures, GCMS will not help you. It is a waste of money in case you order your GCMS notes more than once.
2nd wave and 3rd wave: Jan 2021 to October 2021
2nd Remedical request: November 2021
Remedicals completed: 27th November 2021
Christmas break: December 2021
New year break: January 2022
By now we were exhausted so we had moved on.
Passport Request: April 2022
Stamping completed within 15 days of receiving the passport request
By now, we were pregnant so we decided to make a soft landing. Settling down in Canada and finding the job would have been difficult at this stage.
Passport received: April 25, 2022
Travel to Canada: May 1, 2022
We flew Air Canada via Frankfurt. Now, if you are an Indian, you do not need any transit visa unless you are changing airports. Air Canada has a code sharing agreement with Lufthansa. So Mumbai - Frankfurt was Lufthansa and Frankfurt - Toronto was Air Canada. Again, you do not need any visa because it was a single ticket (i.e. we did not book 2 different journeys).
The transit time between 2 flights was only 45 mins. We were sh*t scared and checked multiple times with Air Canada and they confirmed that 45 mins is more than enough. However, the flight was delayed by 30 mins
So we were made to rush upon reaching Frankfurt. The staff was extremely rude but maybe that's how their attitude is. My wife was made to run in this state and we could make it to the gate (after a really bad security check) in 30 mins. But the funny part was.. The Air Canada flight had incoming passengers from airlines all over the world and multiple airlines were delayed. Therefore, while we reached the flight during 'Final Call', the flight was waiting for more passengers for more than 1.5 hours.
The rest of our journey was uneventful until we landed in Toronto.
Arrival in Toronto: May 2, 2022
I don't think Toronto is equipped to handle more than 1 flight per hour!
First, we were told that there might be delay due to customs. But then we were allowed to deboard.
While we had the Arrive Can form, we need to get our passport scanned at the immigration kiosk and then we meet the immigration officer. Because we were landing for the first time, we were asked to go to another immigration hold area.
This is where things get more messy. There was a huge line of people waiting for their passports to get stamped. There was no seating arrangement, no water, no food. There were people of all ages and they could not leave the line. The area was extremely dark as all lights were switched off. The immigration counters appeared empty with hardly 3-5 officers manning over 10 counters.
It took us around 3.5 hours to reach the immigration officer. The immigration officer was really nice and he made a welcome speech. Basic formalities were done and we were good to go. NO. NO ONE CHECKED OUR PROOF OF FUNDS OR ANY DOCUMENTS! ALSO, THERE IS NO NEED TO GET YOUR PROOF OF FUNDS STAMPED BY THE BANK IN CASE YOU FORGOT.
We thought we are done and we would find our baggage but we had to scan the entire airport before we could find our baggage. Remember - 4 hours had already passed after landing.
Then we wanted to declare goods and goods to follow. The counters were empty again and we were made to wait. We had filled the forms already so one officer came and provided a receipt. He also stamped the forms. No baggage check was done.
Again we thought we were done but we got 'randomly' selected for covid screening. Basically, the random selection is done for all passengers exiting the customs hold area
Thankfully, it was not an immediate test but they gave us a home kit. We had to reach our 'home' location and get on a video call and perform the test in front of a health officer. It was an RT-PCR test and not a rapid test so we had to leave the sample outside the house and schedule a courier pick-up. While it was mentioned that the report would arrive within 48 hours, we got our reports 5 days later. Nevertheless, we had already started roaming around because there is no restriction on travel and quarantine period is only 5 days for the infected person and not the relatives.
Return to India: May 15, 2022
This time we flew via Munich. The good part was that there is no immigration check while exiting Canada or while transiting in Munich. There is a transit hold area in Munich and you cannot leave it. However, it is important to note that all shops and restaurants in this transit hold area open only after 11am and if you reach before that, you will only find water available in case you are hungry!
The flight got delayed from Munich because some 'intellectual' travellers had not filled the Health Form which is mandatory to travel to India. Lufthansa folks were really nice to wait for them.
The rest of the flight was uneventful.
Since we landed post midnight in Mumbai, the staff was too drowsy to check our forms so we immediately proceeded towards the immigration counters. We were out in around 30 mins!
PR Card: We received our PR card 3 days back and it is with a relative in Toronto.
Next steps: We would be travelling with our baby, preferably next year. For that, we would need a passport and a visa for the baby and that is something that I need to figure out.
I thought this story would be useful for a few people and I would be happy to help with any queries!
