Dear Friends,

I am new to forum & really impressed with the depth of knowledge, experiences shared on Canada Immigration. I need your expert suggestions/opinions on an issue.

I completed my bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. I underwent some programming courses and now working in a leading IT company in India.

In 2009, at the time of applying Canada PR I was having 3 Years of experience as “Construction Superintendent” (NOC# 0711) & 3 Years of experience as "Computer Programmer" (NOC# 2174). I have submitted all relevant documents for both the experiences. At the time of application as 2174 was not listed in applicable NOCs, I applied for PR under NOC 0711. As on today, I have more than 6 Years of experience in IT!

I have few queries –

1) After getting PR, is it mandatory for me to work under the same NOC of PR application i.e. 0711 (Construction)? Or I can continue working in IT field?

2) Under which NOC, I will have to check Education credentials?

3) Will I pass Education credential check against IT programmer, considering duration of my current experience but no formal bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science?

4) Before landing in Canada, I will request my employer (if it is workable) or will try to arrange some employment in IT.
Will there be any issue doing so, considering my PR will be processed under NOC 0711 (Construction Superintendent)?

5) Any other challenges, for which I will have to be prepared?

I think most of the S/W engineers must be having similar questions. Please share your experience and advice. Kindly also provide any material or discussion links on similar subject.

Thanks a lot! :)

My current status : Still waiting for medical & PPR call! :(

1) NO, you can work in any field you want. In fact, most people find it challenging to start working in their preferred field when they first enter Canada.
2) Why do you want to check your education credentials? If you want to do it so that your credentials are recognized by canadian employers, then you should do it for your degree under which you want to work.
3) I guess you will just have to find out! If you are getting your SKILLs assessed, you might pass since you have experience in the field. But, if you are assessing your education credential, then it's a different issue since you don't have education in the field to begin with. This is only my guess though. I don't really know what they look at during such assessment. You could probably find out by looking into assessing body's websites.
4) Your PR application will not be an issue.

Thanks "Namaste"!!

I was a bit messed up between checking Education Credentials & working in regulated industry. So after your inputs & some research, I have some understanding -
1) As Computer Programmer (NOC# 2174) is non-regulated occupation in Canada, it's upto employer's discretion to consider educational qualification & experience.
2) As far as my NOC (0711 - Construction Superintendent) of PR application is concerned, it is also a non-regulated one. Even if it would have been regulated industry (like lawyer, nurses etc), it's upto applicant to apply for a license. As I wanted to continue in IT industry (non-regulated), I need not to apply for license.

Please confirm or clarify if I am misunderstood something.

I have few more question -
1) Does PR or landing documents has NOC of application mentioned on it?
2) If I have arranged job in IT (different NOC than PR application) at the time of landing in Canada, will it create any issue with immigration official?
3) What can be done to avoid any conflict after First Landing?

Help much much appreciated! Thanks!

You don't need to worry about any of these. How will the immigration official know that you have employment arranged at the time of landing? If you had applied with an arranged employment, it would be different. But, after getting the PR visa, whatever field you choose to work in does not matter. Most people work on whatever job they can find before they can work in their desired NOC. PR is not like temporary work visa where the visa holder has to work in the designated occupation. As a PR, you are a free man to work wherever you want.

Help much much appreciated! Thanks!
