My boyfriend and I met in July. I had an apartment and he moved in with me in September. We are living in Mexico so there is no lease and all of the ultilities were included. We didn't get any mail and don't even have bank accounts here... so the only proof we have that we have been living together would be a written rent reciept from the landlord and testimonies from family. Is that enough? We lived there from Sept-Dec. In December we travelled around together for 2 months staying in various places (left all our stuff at my boyfriend's aunt's house)- does this disrupt our co-habitation if we were traveling together??? We have pictures from every place and I kept a journal the whole time.
In February we moved into a new apartment in a new city and again we will have the rent receipt with both our names on it. Utilities are included once again.
We are thinking of setting up a bank account soon so at least we will have that.
We are not going to apply until probably November, once we are in Canada so we will have been living together for over a year...

We have a lot of proof of our relationship but I am just worried if we have enough proof of our living together.

One more question- if the rent receipts & family testimonies are in spanish do we have to get them translated by a professional translator? would an english teacher that is mexican count as a professional translator?

Thank you!

Honestly, my fiance and I were basically in the same situation.
We just decided since we already want to get married sometime and already live like a married couple then why not just do it now.

Sure it is a whole lot sooner than expected but if it is for love then I will do it. Anything to keep from losing my partner.
We were originally going to file common law but I just felt like we had less to offer as proof and evidence to show for it.
We have a lot to show as proof of relationship but not the common-law part of it.

Sorry I can't give you any better advice, just talking from experience.

Hi,

My situation was kind of similar. You can read full details, including dpenabills excellent posts on proof of co-habitation vs. genuineness of relationship (which you seem aware of), here...

www dot immigration dot ca/discussion2/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=52029

(not allowed to post proper links for some no doubt lame reason)

And my timeline/resolution here:

www dot canadavisa dot com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/sufficient-proof-of-cohabitation-in-common-law-application-t22135.0.html

(again not allowed to post proper links)

We had no leases and we travelled but we did have a joint bank account early on which showed an intertwining of affairs - we supplied bank statements showing rent/groceries/wages being moved in/out. In your case you have the rental receipts. I would get the bank account asap - I *think* it was key in my case - and use it. We also supplied a number of statutory declarations from ourselves, our parents, friends and family attesting to us living together at various places interrupted by bits of travel and a couple of stints of 10 weeks apart. We also gave them absolutely anything with our names and addresses at the same place including postcards, letters from home etc...

Keep collecting everything/anything you can. I think you'll be alright.
