Is this doable?

This is my situation: me and my husband have a trip booked for July 13: 1 week in Hawaii, from Calgary.

I am concerned that my PR card might not arrived in time and I came to find out that I can't use my old TRV and I will not have time to apply for a travel document when down there, which sucks..

However, upon our return, we are not flying straight home, we actually have a layover in Seattle before the last flight to Calgary.
I heard that if you cross the border by car (rented or private), you don't actually need your PR card (COPR + passport would do it).

Now, my questions are: is this information correct? If so, can I rent a car in Seattle, drive to BC, cross the border without my PR card and then arrange my trip back to Calgary from BC (either by car or by plane)?

I am hoping that this is doable, so I don't have to worry about changing my trip plans..

I am in same situation. I asked this question during landing in Carway and officer told that COPR+ Passport is enough. They can see that you are waiting for PR cards in theirs system.

Checkout the cost of a one way US to Canada car rental though likely be a drop off charge to cover repatriation of the vehicle

Thank you everyone for your inputs.. I was really concerned if they would accept my COPR when crossing the border by land. That is great. Worse case scenario, will sure be a long drive but it is definitely easier than cancelling my trip and loosing all that money. By the way, I check the car rental and they do charge a fee for the different drop-off location. Even so, still cheaper and easier that way.

There's a bus/train from Seattle to Vancouver costs around $20-40 pp. Consider using those as well before renting a car.

That would be commercial travel, so she will need a PR card or PRTD to reenter Canada, which is the situation she is trying to avoid. The CoPR is acceptable only for a private or rental car.
