I recently applied to sponsor my parents... I just wanted to find out if student grant is considered as social assistance. I have already been approved for student loan to start school this fall, but also wanted to apply for student grant... don't know if it's social assistance. Any advice will be appreciated.

no, you are fine.

No, a student "grant" is not social assistance. HOWEVER,based on what you have written, your situation is not just "fine" as is. In order to be eligible to sponsor your parents, you must meet the LICO (low income cut-off) which is currently $33,933 for 3 people (you + your parents). And based on your previous postings, looks like you need to meet the LICO for 8 or even 9 people ($64,674 for 8 and $70,621 for 9) How will you meet this while going to school, especially considering that you have a student loan??

You don't just have to meet the LICO when you apply. You need to meet the LICO when you apply AND throughout the duration of your sponsorship application. CIC may re-assess your financial situation at any point during the application process to check if you continue to meet LICO. If you don't meet the LICO, then your application will be refused.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, i filed for my parents and two dependents (4)... with my family of 5, i will need an income of 9 people....which is $70,621, I presently meet the LICO. I will be attending Athabasca Uni which is Online studies... therefore be able to keep my full time job. My husband is also a co-sponsor who is self employed and also a full time student. I just wanted to find out if student grant is considered as social assistance. Thanks again for your time.

Just curious...where can you get a student grant with an income of $70,000 per year? I thought grants were based on need.

I was basing my information simply on what she has asked. I don't have the time to read everyone's history if its in another post.

?? I wasn't suggesting that you do go read any previous posts. Even just with the info. in the first posting -- a student with a student loan applying to sponsor her parents -- that should raise some red flags. Most students are not able to continue working fulltime and so would not be able to even come close to meeting the LICO. She says she can, so that's all that matters.

Before filing for student loan, i thought it would'nt be granted as well.. based on my income. But, i think they take other things into consideration for example, how much you make monthly...i have 3 kids under 7 years... my husband presently is unemployed and also a full time student... i think i was appoved for student loan based on the above points. Like i said before, my University studies will be online...not a traditional class room education, thus will be able to keep my full time job. Also, they gave me less than $4000 for a year tuition as student loan so, i have to pay the rest of the tuition. ...was not eligible for student grant. Thanks for your time
