Dear friends,
I am perplexed with the following issue :-

"Is Professional Insurance required for Doctors/Physiotherapists/Health care Professionals ??"

I would be thankful if some kind forum member can enlighten about the above query.
I have heard from a friend, that in order to practice Physiotherapy in Australia, apart from the mandatory registration/licensure from the regulating body, as per rules it is essential that a Physiotherapist should have a Professional Insurance worth at least 5 million dollars !!! Such a professional insurance would cover the risk of causing harm (unintentional/intentional or negligence resulting in loss of life/any other form of loss of a patient or receiver of treatment- is debatable) by the health care provider.

I wonder, if in order to practice as a Physiotherapist in Canada, the above Professional Insurance is required too or not (even if a person obtains the necessary licence to practice from the concerned regulatory body??
If this is true, then the major concern would be, whether we poor guys (who with great difficulty manage to declare/show the minimum settlement funds required by CIC) would be able to afford the premium of such a heavy insurance/risk cover if it is mandatory?? Would that not amount to us people not being able to practice our profession at all in dream destination Canada??

Someone who is having knowledge on this issue please enlighten us !! (i guess Insurance claim examiners & adjusters in Canada would be able to guide on this)

regards,

5 million is too much even for a canadian citizen. the premium on such an amount wud b just too much to make the practicing as PT non viable.

Hi again dear kg_bang,
I am a physiotherapist and hence have the least knowledge of ayurvedic system of medicine...yet i will try to answer your question to the best of my ability...
As far as I understand, certain ayurvedic preparations cause the viscosity of blood to be decreased and therefore, the blood samples thus taken for HIV testing could yield a false positive result which would then require a confirmatory test to prove otherwise...this is a temporary thing and one should be able to tide over it...but in the whole process we would lose precious time in processing of our file...isnt it??
Secondly, ayurvedic medicines are aimed at enhancing the immune system of an individual, so again, could be a possibility that they may interfere with the outcome of above mentioned lab. investigations...
Other than that, I do not see any harm in consuming ayurvedic drugs and going in for MR...
All the best...please do let us know about the progress of ur immigration application :)

Yes dear ovais,
I too feel that 5 million $ is a whopping amount whose premium cannot be afforded at all by newly landed immigrants...My source of this info is a hear-say and could be wrong also (i wish it turns out to be incorrect)...but it does start alarm bells ringing in our heads when we think that what if it really is true???

Seniors...where are u ???

Juner: Liability Insurance is DEFINATELY required for doctors. Check out http://www.cpsa.ab.ca and similar sites (College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta) - each province has its own professional association. Physiotherapists fall into the same situation http://www.physiotherapyalberta.ca and other health professionals vary by occupation and regulatory body although I doubt anybody would practise without insurance except for POSSIBLY a staff nurse in a medical facility (who likely has the coverage, just through the employer instead of having to obtain it individually). The cost of these policies does not tend to be too onerous as Canada generally speaking has pretty good systems and people in place, and lawsuits in these areas are not nearly as common or expensive as they would be in the US for example. Hope this helps.
