If you became a Permanent Resident under your spouses application via the Provincial nominee program (economic class) are you classed as being sponsored by them? I am considering sponsoring a family member to come to Canada and someone told me I couldn't because I haven't lived here for 5 years but I thought that only applied to those who were sponsored to come to Canada and it was my understanding that I wasn't sponsored to come to Canada. Can someone please clarify for me? Thank you!

I do not believe so, no, but hopefully someone else with more experience will be able to shed some light.

You can sponsor as a Permanent Resident but depends who you want to sponsor:

There is no such 5 year rule.

Hi Andy, my question is more about whether I am considered as someone who was 'sponsored' to come to Canada because if I was sponsored then I cannot therefore sponsor a family member until I have been a permanent resident for 5 years (according to IRCC eligibility). I came to Canada as a permanent resident under the economic class as a dependent (my spouse was the principal applicant).

No, you were not sponsored.

If there was such a rule, it will clearly say on the link I provided to you which says who can and cannot sponsor.
Plain and simple: If you are a Permanent Resident(doesn't matter how, when and where you got your PR status), you qualify to sponsor. Meeting sponsorship requirements and who you can sponsor is a different story.
The only exception or limitation is in how many people you can sponsor with a certain period.

Incorrect. People who were sponsored by a spouse are unable to sponsor a new spouse for 5 years. This is to prevent Marriages of Convenience where the sponsored spouse uses a Canadian to come to Canada and then immediately leaves them and tries to bring the real partner from home.

Thank you! Do you know where I can get proof of this please? I am being told the opposite by my local settlement agency.

Just to clarify, are you specifically talking about Manitoba provincial immigration or the federal family sponsorship?

Because if you are talking about federal family immigration, I don’t believe you qualify to sponsor a family member since you have a spouse. Manitoba sponsorship may be another story.

I came to Canada via the Manitoba Provincial nominee program (spouse is skilled worked so under his application for PR). I have been PR for 2.5 years but am being told that I am not eligible to sponsor my parents to come to Canada because I was 'sponsored' by spouse so need to wait until I am PR for 5 years.

The CIC website is confusing, I also don't believe I was sponsored to come to Canada as I was a part of spouse's PR application (so he couldn't sponsor me because he wasn't yet PR).

Confused your previous posts indicated that you were getting divorced before sponsorship.

Saw a similar question yesterday. Someone seems to be confused. The 5 years rule is for spouses who have been sponsored. If they get divorced they must wait 5 years after they receive PR to sponsor another spouse.

Ok, you should be able to sponsor your parents without restrictions for as long as you are eligible (3 taxation years, etc.). As previously said, you were not sponsored. Not sure why the settlement agency told you otherwise.

MPNP is not sponsorship. Tell this settlement agnecy to show you the justification for stating that you were sponsored.
