Does anyone know... barring medical, criminal, sponsor not qualifying to sponsor, documents missing or incorrect etc (basically big reasons) is it possible to have your application for spousal sponsorship be refused without even interviewing the applicant?

Sure it is it can be refused right at mississauga, but its unlikely they would refuse the sponsored without an interview, unless there is a lot missing or misrepresentation on the ap.
But if its straight forward and they just want more proof or clairification its unlikely they would refuse without giving you a chance.

Of course! They look and can immediately tell the relationship is fake. I have a friend her neighbour had married a Chinese woman, they applied and was refused. He then later married another Chinese woman and he again was refused. She told me there was a time between the marriages but unless there was a huge time I would be wondering about him and any woman he married let alone a Chinese woman.

Maybe I've read too many posts where the relationship appears to be genuine but the couple was refused. I just wondered if they were refused without even a chance to prove it in person. So many people seem to have so much evidence but still get refused, I don't really understand that. Of course each case is different. I didn't really mean the obvious scammers, I meant the genuine relationships. I guess I have to have faith in the system.

Anything is possible in this crazy process. However, the liklihood of this happening is few and far between. Even if you sent in no proof, they're more likely to ask you to provide evidence than just nothing. It would have to have "fake" written all over it for something like this to happen! I know you're in the August thread sitandwait, what visa office are you applying to? Some have higher refusal rates than others, but even that shouldn't discourage you. I am quite sure you're fine!!! ;D

A friend of mine had her application to sponsor her husband rejected (after an interview)... they appealed and had the opportunity to present more evidence and were finally approved. Speaking to her, even she admitted she could see why they had doubts (even though it *is* a genuine relationship). If we're honest with ourselves, I'm sure most of us can see holes in our evidence for whatever reason. Just have to look at it from the perspective of someone who has no idea who you are except for what's been submitted... I'm sure it's very difficult to tell sometimes. I'm pretty sure that it would have to be a really blatently terrible application to not even be given the opportunity to defend yourself... and by terrible I don't mean missing information, I mean including information that in itself creates doubt (like the type described by the luckiest guy) or applying as a conjugal relationship with no reason for not cohabitating, etc.

Does anyone know if there's a website that shows information on refusal rates for various visa offices?

Please let me know if/when you find that website, because I've seen people post the following stats:
Buffalo acceptance rate "95%" and Accra With "40%" refusal rate. However, I've yet to see any real proof behind those statements.

EDIT - On an old post here, I found this link: http://www.thestar.com/article/658649
The Toronto Star article shows the lowest vs highest rejection rates per office from 2008. This has to be where these statistics are coming from. Whether or not they're true, who knows.

Compilation of statistics can be found in the "Facts and Figures: Immigration Overview for Permanent and Temporary Residents" published by CIC. PDF version: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/research-stats/facts2008.pdf

This doesn't give the refusal rates and the statistics are up to 2008 but it may still be useful. And I am not sure if CIC published any newer version.

yeeesh.... so many reasons that is a terrible article. At least you get rates for a few countries... good to know it's relatively low in most places. And really, it wouldn't be surprising to find that some offices deal with more fraudulent cases as well as more applications compiled with insufficient evidence since culture would have a big impact on how one completes an application and how much relationship information is deemed appropriate to share.

Anyway, back to waiting....

Thank you for posting all of that information. It is what I expected though. The visa office I am applying to is Santo Domingo. Immediately there is an uphill battle by the stats and info I've read.
When I read what things are considered red flags, good lord, we pretty much have all of those things. Hubby and I worked hard to provide all the information we could surrounding our meeting, relationship, wedding, etc. Just hoping that if the red flags aren't enough to refuse us without even giving us a chance. Each case is different.

sitandwait, my husband and I are in the same boat. We are different races, different religions, he is from one of the countries known for marriage fraud, we met online, none of our families were able to come to our tiny wedding...we provided every bit of proof we could, but from what I have read, that isn't always enough. I am hoping that they interview him, because I know they will see his heart if they have that opportunity. We are a family and the rest is up to god (and immigration, unfortunately..)

Nice to know someone is in the same boat. Now I may be incorrect but I thought I read that your visa post has a high approval rate. Don't quote me on that.
Please keep in touch so that I can see how your case is progressing so that I will know what I can expect. It will be interesting. Fingers crossed.
