Hi guys okay so I know that being a recipient of EI is not considered social assistance so does that also mean that I can apply for funding for training that is offered to people who are or have been on EI so is this considered social assistance? When I called CIC today I spoke to two people and nobody knew anything. Here is a link to the information but I didn't find anything in regards to being a sponsor. So my guess is it's okay however I would not want it to affect my sponsorship in any sort of the way if I went ahead and applied. Hoping somebody can Give me some correct information. Thanks in advance

It sounds OK, but be careful - in some provinces they call welfare or social assistance by some sort of 'work training' name. If you are getting that, it is social assistance. What province are you in?

Try contacting the people at EI or wherever who are running the program and ask if it is considered welfare or social assistance. If it is considered EI, then it is OK for you to sponsor.

Be very careful with this.

I'm an apprentice electrician. For 2 years, I applied for something called "Alberta Apprentice Income Support". It was money sent by the government to apprentices to assist with the costs of going to school and housing expenses. I was planning to apply for it again in the 3rd year, but I realized that to sponsor someone, you cannot receive social asssitance, so I called the proper Alberta govt contacts and they told me that it was indeed considered "social assistance". Luckily I decided not to apply for it because I was about to also apply for my wife's PR.

Don't call CIC, call the appropriate BC authorities. CIC can't know every single province's programs and whether they constitute social assistance.

Are you able to offer any further information on the training program you were undertaking? I know it's different depending on the Province you're in, but any info you can provide would I greatly appreciated. I was looking to take a trade at some point in the future through college, so I don't want to be caught out"

When I asked my case manager about it she said she wasn't 100% sure but that she doesn't think its concidered social assistance, And that It is Employment Program of BC, Work BC and it is an Employment Service funded by both BC and Service Canada in a Labour Market agreement.

That's really all the information I have :/ I emailed her again today to tell her to find out for me 100% because if anyone should know it should be her. I'm getting so frustrated with ppl lately :/

well, really it doesn't matter if she or you think she IS 100% sure. if CIC decides it counts as social assistance, they will reject the sponsor's application. What your caseworker thinks isn't as important as what CIC thinks. at this point, all you can do is submit a solid application and see what happens. IF rejected, then you can work on correcting what needs to be corrected to be an eligible sponsor.

when I called CIC the operator said she doesn't know every provinces programs and whether they constitute social assistance, and then I would have to call and find out myself. Basically I've been going in circles trying to find out. I've already submitted My application so I don't want anything to affect it that's why I need to know this information before I go ahead with the program
