Is essential travel letter necessary?

What the title says. Do I have to get an email/ letter from university that states my travel is essential for my travels? Unfortunately the university staff are on holiday till 4th of Jan and my flight is Jan 7th.

try calling them and sending them emails

University of Alberta. They gave me a form to fill on Dec 21 (while they are on holiday) when I tried to fill the form, they ask me to get a letter from my department first before filling the form which is cannot be done, although I sent my department an email but no one replied.

some people say it’s a must and some people say it’s not. Do you have a source for that?

my friend landed last week and didn't require any such letter. Just make sure you have a good quarantine plan as you will be asked at the airport by the CBSA.

He came from Singapore. At the Singapore airport, he was asked if he had any COVID related symptoms. he was allowed to travel without any issues.
