My spouse is sponsoring me for Inland PR. She was employed for the last 6 months and has recently been laid off. Can she collect EI and still sponsor me while looking for work? I know that sponsors are disqualified if they are using social assistance. So, is EI social assitance?

Thanks

No, EI is not social assistance, so no worries.

Whey they say "social assistance", it's just a politically-correct way of saying "welfare". And in Canada, god forbid we should call things what they really are. ::)

So for that reason, no, EI is not welfare, because you're required to pay into EI in order receive it.

You do not need to inform CIC of changes in work status of the sponsor at all. No need to worry about this. The website and documents all state they basically only want to know about births, deaths, adoptions, divorces and changes of address.

On a similar note, I have this question: can the sponsor go on welfare once the spouse has landed? my sponsor has been unemployed for some time and cannot collect EI so would he qualify for welfare without getting into trouble with Immigration? i'd appreciate your opinion if you've been to this experience. thanks.

This question may be better directed to the sponsor's member of provincial parliament (MPP) in your area. Social assistance is provinicial and each province has their own rules and regulations on this. I guess the challenge would be as the sponsor signing to provide for the spouse, (the undertaking) social assistance is usually barely enough for a cat to live on, never mind a couple with one partner just landing. Blessings and prayers for a successful job hunt.

We had this question on the forum about a year ago.

I believe this is a problem. When your sponsor goes on welfare, they will have to include you (the landed spouse) in the application. However you are not allowed to be on welfare for three years after you land. So any welfare taken during the first three years after landing by your family is going to be a problem and some/all of this money will have to be repaid to the government.

Your sponsor should stay off welfare until three years have passed since you landed. You can help by looking for work yourself after you land.

Good recall and answer scylla, I believe you are correct on this matter. Thanks for the refresh :)

Your sponsor needs to take any job unless they are on disability. I believe disability benefits are not quite the same as welfare in this case.

I have heard that if you do and they find out you will get refused. I wouldn't recommend it.

The sponsor is responsible for the financial well being of the person they are bringing here, not the Canadian taxpayers. That is why CIC checks it out in the first place.

Take Care
