I think DOB mentioned in Passport is sufficient proof of Date of birth for principal applicant as well the spouse. I am not 100 % sure though, any experienced member can confirm on this!!

If you don't have one, get it made through the right channels.
These days it's not an issue unless one is VERY VERY old.

Birth Certificates are easily gettable in almost any country these days.
