Hi,

I need your help guys and any feedback is appreciated.
I am marrying my girlfriend of 4 years (we went to medical school together in India) this month. She is a Canadian citizen. I am on a student visa. My student visa extension expires in April.
Our open-work permit application will take 4-5 months (may or june) but meanwhile I need to maintain legal status. Do I apply for a visitor record?

Thank you!!

Visa does not give you status. What gives you status is your study permit and its validity, if you apply for PGWP before your study permit expires you are on implied status and can remain & work in Canada until a decision is made on your PGWP application.

Thank you! I will not get a PGWP because it is a private college. My study permit/visa expires in April. We won't hear back for the open work permit (spousal application) until may-june which leaves a gap of 1-2 months without legal status, hope this clarifies! Thank you

As long as you apply before your study permit expires, you will have Implied Status.

Can I study while waiting on the PR application? I will have an open work permit hopefully but can I also apply for a study permit then too?

You can only study if you have a valid study permit or are on Implied Status from applying for a study permit extension.

You don't get both permits. Either you apply for a study permit extension (with a new school admission) or you apply for the OWP.
