Pre-Assessed..
Am currently dating a woman who has filed for a divorce from her hubby whom they went different ways with 7 yrs now...He defaulted appearing in court...Am an international student...Is there any away she can sponsor me..we have been dating for like a yr and living together....

If you`ve been living together continuously for 12 months, and can prove it, then I think she can sponsor you as common-law.

Agreed. You need to be either married or common law (have lived together for at least one full year) for her to qualify to sponsor you.

Has the divorce been finalized and done with? Or it is still "in process". Is she officially divorced already?

Best to check if this is a requirement before applying...

She don't have to be divorced to apply for common law . You can live as common law in Canada even if you are not divorced.

We have been dating for about a yr now bu thave lived together for about seven months......I hear i must have lived together for 1 yr before she can sponsor me.....

I understand i have to proove things like commitment.....We only have 2 joint accounts in RBC and TD....what else do we need to have to proove that we are serious and committed to each other so that we can be successful with our application....

Thanks

stop referring to her as a woman and refer to her as your gf , sweetheart etc and that's a start. :) jokin . Joint rent , pictures , letters from people who know you are dating and living together , it joint joint joint in everything .

Thanks...Besides the 2 joint accounts,am working on having our rent agreement signed in our both names.......Is it ideal or advisable to have her mom write to us a letter acknowledging that we live together and that she approve of her sponsoring me.....?????

I know her step son can support us too.....More suggestions pls....

Am humbled by the support so far????

You need at least 2 statutory declarations of friends/family confirming that they know both of you and that you have been in a genuine and ongoing common-law relationship/ are living together.
Joint rental agreement, joint utility bills, if you have joint health insurance and joint life insurance. Pictures, maybe Facebook, everything that you can think of that shows that you are a genuine couple and are living together

Also don't forget to inform CRA of your "commonlaw" status when you have lived together for 12 months. No proof is required, just mail in the form for both of you.

Thanks members for the help i have received from you so far.....Am making good progress as far as this sponsorship thing is concerned..so far we have the 4lowing docs

1.Joint a/c RBC
2.Joint a/c T.D
3.Letter from her mom
4.Letter from her close friend
5.Joint agreement..

What more to add on this list??

Any other documents that you have to prove the status of your relationship. Just keep in mind you can't actually file the application until you have lived together for a full year to qualify as common law. If you apply even one day early, you could be rejected.

What about letters from your side of the family? You still have time to get them, according to your dates you listed above, to help bolster your claim.

Thx alot
