When I am sending out my application, do I need to apply for the open work permit and do I have to apply for an extension of stay?

If yes, do I need two separate applications, one with A marked for the "Extension of temporary resident status as a visitor" and a seperate application with C marked for "An intial work permit or extension of work permit"?

Also what do I write as my reason to extend?
If I have to include both applications do I need to include the same things that are needed for a regular extension?

If I don't have my police clearance before it gets close to my extension expiring, can I submit that later on?
You should apply for an open work permit at the same time as the PR app, that when, when they approve you for PR, they immediately send you a work permit. If you do that, don't even worry about the extension of status. The work permit app will give you implied temporary status until they make a decision on your PR app. you will only check box C as you are only applying for a work permit and you will include your work permit in the same envelope with your application for PR and send it off to Vegreville. Just be clear, straightforward and honest in your explanation for work permit. You may as well include the proof of finances and things like that, just to be safe, but probably not necessary.

You need your police certificates before you send anything out.

Thank you for the reply. :)

What happens if it is sent to the local office without AIP. Will I be on implied status then until they approve or refuse?
And can you give me an example of what you wrote for your reason? Do I need to include a copy of the marriage certificate or no?

As for me, I sent an app for visitor extension, not an app for OWP, because at that time, I did not know I could. So I actually have to apply for OWP when I get AIP. So, when I applied for visitor extension with my PR app, they sent me a visitor extension about 3 months later, that lasts for 1 year. I am pretty sure the same thing does not happen when you apply for the OWP, because a visitor record is different than a work permit. But I am also pretty sure that you are on implied status for the duration of your PR app processing when you concurrently apply for an OWP, regardless of whether it goes to a local office (somebody correct me if I'm wrong). The real danger with inland apps going to local offices, I believe, would be that, yes, you are on implied status, but essentially stuck here without being able to work or get health care or anything for who knows how long...I'm sure you are aware of that, though.

So, anyway, my reason for visitor extension was probably different than you would put for an OWP. I was talking about things like being with my husband and how he'll support me blah blah blah. If I were in your shoes, I would maybe put something along the lines of how you would like to be able to work after receiving first stage approval. Something like that?

I included another copy of the marriage certificate with my visitor extension app, even though one was in with my PR app, just in case. Probably would not hurt to throw one in with yor OWP app.

Yes, I was aware of the risk when it comes to Inland.
Thank you for your response. It helps a lot.

How would I need to include it in there?
I am afraid if I but it in an envelope and label in open work permit and not to open until AIP and put it in with the PR app that they will try to look at it before hand and refuse it as I saw that happen with someone that applied inland when they lost the whole rest of the app and processed the OWP instead and refused it.

So what you do you think would be the best way to attach and include it with the PR app?

Well, here's our story:

Inland Sponsorship/PR mailed february 2nd, 2010.
Rec'd february 5th @ CPC vegreville, electronic signature confirmed.

received a letter March 13th, stating that OWP app (included in same envelope with Sponsorship/PR) was denied; she is not eligible. She must restore her status in Canada or leave within 14 days (TRV expired).

Two weeks worth of daily phone calls to CIC result in another letter stating that there was NO APPLICATION for PR/Sponsorship submitted with the OWP application - only the supporting documents (Mind you, they still cashed the receipts for the related fees). Also states that despite the fact that we included a letter asking for OWP processing AFTER receiving AIP, decision is final.

Believe me - we sent a 5* application that would barely fit in the large XpressPost envelope. Everything was present and accounted for, and more, triple-checked by two people.
We were advised (not requested) by a CIC Agent to send copies of everything in our application once more, addressed to the officer whose employee number was on our letter.

Just before doing so, decided to check ECAS one last time... guess what? Using our client number, the PR application shows "Application Received February 5th, 2010. We started processing your application on April 20th, 2010".

So we called CIC again... they "have no record" of having lost our application, processed part of it out of order, and found the rest of it again. Apparently, to the Call Center, it appears as though all is well and we shouldn't be worrying at this point about not having receiver AOR of the sponsorship application. "Everything is in order, and no news is good news", they say - "don't send any documents unless they are specifically requested". All's well that ends well, I guess!

However! It's a little disconcerting that her PR application is listed as "In progress", and my sponsorship is not - they are supposedly only opening applications received up to October 19, 2009... how in the world are they processing our February application if they haven't even opened the late October ones yet?

I really hope they haven't #$%^'d up again, processing the PR without the sponsorship... CIC Call Center is not able to confirm or deny this, not having access to our case.

Any thoughts? Has anyone who submitted their app around this time heard anything yet (we know it's still early).

Thanks and good luck to everyone - may your experience be a LOT smoother than ours!!

i sent my application feb 4, they got it feb 9. they started my application april 27.
yes, they are opening applications received february and i guess even march now.
the thing is: they open application and i dont know what they do either check all papers are present and so on, and put starters data into ecas. and thats it i suppose. then those applications are waiting for their turn to procceed later.
it says they proceeding applications received in october, which means they are giving/or not AIP and such to those people.
so nothing wrong that its in process that was received in february. thats how it has to be and be happy with it.
as i understand sometimes they dont put data to ecas till they decide to give AIP etc. maybe they miss it, maybe they make it faster with those applications, since some ppl can log in to ecas only when they are granted AIP.
also its inland applications. their wont be a sign of ur sponsorship application "in process". it goes generally in process all together. unless u are not eligible to sponsor then they send u a letter with saying so.

cdarroch: "20/04 PR app mysteriously "in process" 4 months ahead of schedule?"
its NOT "mysterious". that is normal. it is unusual when u dont get any news till ur AIP etc.

u can go back (dont be lazy) in pages of this thread and check all inlanders' timelines - mostly all of their apps started 2 months +/- after receiving.

so far it happened only to one person here (i guess) so dont be so paranoid. yes i agree it makes an impression that irresponsible and slow people work there but nothing u can do just wait and believe. to put OWP request with ur PR application is a normal thing and its more comfortable than to ask for it later after u get AIP, because it will take more time to wait for ur OWP. if u include OWP request together with ur PR, u will get AIP and OWP together so no wait anymore. i didnt know that before so i didnt include OWP which i regret now. ill need to ask OWP after i get AIP (i very hope i get it).

how to include ur OWP request - just go to cic website, theres a guide how to do it, and document checklist for it. just read and follow instructions, and then put lets say "a folder" for OWP together with "folder" for PR and sponsorship into one envelope and send it.
good luck.

I started this thread in hope that it will live and will be useful for all people who applied inland. I am thrilled that it lives on. My immigration process is complete.
I wish everyone patience, patience and more patience. It will all come to conclusion.

Here is MY TIMELINE:

INLAND. VANCOUVER.

Application sent September 29th 2009
Application received by CIC-V October 1st 2009
Application started processing by CIC-V October 29th 2009
AIP and open work permit received April 5th 2010
Landing interview and PR CARD received May 20th 2010

Total wait 8 months.

Better than I expected. The process was smooth and easy and now, I am happy to be part of this beautiful country!.

Three things worth to consider:

FILE open work permit together with your application.
Volunteer. (this is how I got great referrals for the job I have full time position now!)
Embrace your family. They are the ones who will provide and support you for many months.

Thank you all and all the best of luck for everyone!

That is really good advice.

If you are here, and you can't work, you can do something to line up your future. Figure out the best places in your market for what you want to do and do an intern type role. Since you aren't getting paid, you can probably negotiate better kinds of work, and more access to Senior talent. This will go a long way to providing you experience and meeting people in whatever industry you are in. I've done it in the past (I hung out in some of the best restaurant kitchens in the world this way), and when you come into any org without looking for money and just wanting to learn, you will open a ton of doors for yourself. It also keeps you from sitting around spending money or watching TV. Industries are connected - if, when you get your PR, the place you are at doesnt have a job for you, you should know the competition well enough to get one there.

Just my $.02

Thanks for the tips! It's been pretty frustrating getting a different answer from CIC every time (including "I don't know")... I did notice everyone's timelines (read the whole thread), I guess the CIC website isn't 100% accurate.
good to know that things at least look normal now... thanks for the peace of mind!

Yay. They should be looking at my file in the next day or so : "Oct 27th received". Got my finger on the button for online OWP filing.

Anyone know how long it takes them to update the site? Looks like 24 hours.

IMPORTANT TAX RETURN TIP FOR INLANDERS!

YOUR SPOUSES CAN CLAIM YOU AS DEPENDANT DECLARING THEIR TAXES. YOU GET THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS BACK. MY HUSBAND GOT OVER 3K CLAIMING ME AS DEPENDANT.

MAKE SURE TO GET SIN NUMBER ASAP. THE BEST THING TO DO IT IS TO FILE OPEN WORK PERMIT AND WHEN YOU GET IT, APPLY FOR SOCIAL INSURANCE NUMBER. WHEN YOUR SPOUSE FILE TAXES NEXT TIME, HE CAN USE YOUR SIN NUMBER AS A PROOF THAT YOU HAD NO INCOME AND HE CAN CLAIM YOU AS A DEPENDANT.

WE LIVE AND LEARN...

GOOD LUCK!
