Hi all!
So I've posted here a few times. Long story short. I'm an American Student who is going to school in BC. Me and my boyfriend are going to apply for common law here in Dec. We're saving everything up. We have a lease. We got all that covered.
A friend of ours just went through the similar process and told me that if you do outland. You CANNOT live in Canada.
BUT if you do Inland you CAN and get a work permit.
My student visa is good till April 2019. Could I do an outland application and still attend school here? Since I'd be able to leave and come back and visit my family.
If I do outland do I HAVE to go to a Doctor in the states?
and do things specifically in the states?
I'm just terrified of doing something wrong and ruining the whole thing.

DO NOT APPLY INLAND. first of all, current us citizens are being approved for Outland in 2-4 months right now. Someone even was approved in 5-6 weeks. It is very very very likely that you would be totally approved as an outland pr applicant in as much as the same time, or less, than it would take to get the owp as an inland applicant.

second of all, while your friend is "Technically" correct about some people not being about to "live" in canada while an outland application is processing, she is not entirely correct. You can certainly be in canada as a visitor, worker or student while your outland application processes AND you can apply to extend your stay as a visitor while your application processes (if your other visas expire). there are thousands of people who do this without issue. I think what your friend is referring to is that it is generally cautioned for visitors to use the term "living" while crossing the border because technically they don't have the right "live" in canada until approved for a student or work visa or PR. you, as someone with a valid student visa DOES have that right to live in canada right now AND have every right to apply outland. an outland application has NOTHING to do with where the applicant is currently residing, working or studying. it only has to do with where they are from and where their application will process.

DO NOT APPLY INLAND. YOU WILL HATE YOURSELF 2 YEARS FROM NOW (OR EVEN 3 MONTHS FROM NOW WHEN YOU SEE OUTLAND US APPLICANTS GETTING APPROVED) IF YOU DO!!!!!

yes you can still continue school while you wait for your OUTLAND application to process. one thing has nothing to do with the other.

yes, you can get your medical done in canada. it is actually cheaper to do so.

I would also recommend putting your Canadian address on the application, so it will be easier to get your approval paper. this is absolutely acceptable for outland applications.

Thank you for this information! last we had seen was 17 months or an outland application!
So hearing 5 weeks - 4 months is great news!

I would love to still hear from others. Just because I'm really want to hear the same thing over and over again to make sure :D

Still terrified even thinking I have to go to the border. I'm on of those people who are just nervous around Officers and what not.

Americans who apply inland almost always end up regretting this decision deeply. Don't do it. Apply outland.

here...
http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/us-outland-applicants-thread-t106068.6600.html

march US applicants already approved:

April US applicants either already approved or close to it:

oh, and see here...

and if you got "17 months" from the cic website, note this is NOT an average processing time. This is suggesting 80% of applications were processed WITHIN that time, meaning a majority are processed much quicker.

Your friend has NO IDEA what they are talking about. Do not listen to anything they have to say about this process.

Apply outland. The only time you would need to go to the border is to land as a PR, which is a simple and straightforward process.
