Hi,
I’m a Canadian living in Japan for 20 years. My wife and I are planning to move to Canada in August 2023 with our 2 children. We would like her to be able to get an open work permit as soon as possible.
Is it possible for us to move back to Canada and then start the process for an inland sponsorship? Is there a set amount of time that I need to be in Canada before we can do this? Is our only option an outland sponsorship?

Yes, you can come to Canada and apply inland. There is no set time you need to be in Canada before you can apply inland. Note that the open work permits are taking a long time to be approved these days (e.g. 8 months).

Thanks for the above replies. Given our situation, is it recommended to start the outland process now or wait until we arrive to start the inland process. Current processing times have outland taking 22 mths. That’s a very concerning amount of time…
