He actually first came to Canada to work in 2006 (in and out on work permits for a bunch of years, then here on a study permit, then post grad work permit, now PR applicant) and when they gave him a SIN at that point it doesn't have an expiry. Friends who have come over to wotk in more recent years have expiries on theirs though so perhaps it changed sometime after 2006.
Yes, as you said, the date of expiry was not on the card before. I had a temporary SIN card in 2002-2003. I lost it, though. After I went to Service Canada on last November with my OWP, a new card with the expiry date was sent to me. But the number of SIN was the same as before, though I had not been in Canada about 10 years.

In any case, I guess if everything goes quickly between getting our AIP yesterday and getting a DM/landing date, he won't spend much time actually working under the OWP, before he gets PR and a permanent SIN.
Maybe my case is this. My AIP&DM was 28th Oct, I received my OWP on 4th Nov and the landing interview was 28th Nov.

Friends of ours who did this process a year or so ago said they were able to apply for the permanent SIN right in the same office/building as their landing appointment, as soon as they were granted PR!
Well, it depends on the local office. Some office doesn't give the permanent SIN at the landing interview.
