You are suppose to bring in all your visas, your work permit and visitor visas with you at landing.

They will likely to take your work visa but don't always take your visitor visa. They didn't take my wife's visitor visa even though it is valid. I guess since it will expire anyway, they figured why bother taking it back.

As of right now, it does. By the time you qualify for citizenship under the 3/4 rule, you would fall under the new citizenship 4 / 6 rule. You would lose all days before PR towards citizenship.

Just thought I would post here.... got my OWP extension application approved and will be waiting up to six weeks for the document to be mailed. Now if I can only get the decision on my PR application! My new OWP is good through 30 Sep 2016 so I guess there is no real rush other than just liking to have it done (and starting the clock for when I can apply for citizenship).

I received my hardcopy of my renewed OWP in the mail yesterday which keeps me legal here until 30/9/2016. The pressure is off as I can keep living and working here, and most certainly we should reach DM by the time that ends.

I do have a couple of questions though....

1) Is there anything I can do to "bump" my application in case it's sitting in some dead-letter queue? Seems odd that newer applications are landing while I hear nothing.

2) At what point is it advisable that I punt on permanent residence and just go ahead and apply for citizenship instead?

Thanks,

-Brian

1) There is nothing you can do to speed up your PR processing and land as PR. You are at the mercy of CIC processing time.

2) You can apply for Canadian citizenship 4 years after you land as PR, assuming you haven't left Canada since landing as PR. Must meet 1460 days over 6 year period to qualify at minimum.

Thanks for the response. Guess that was a dumb question as I searched for citizenship requirements after I posted.

I did find that there is a way to apply after only 2 years after getting PR. I have lived in Canada continuously since 2010 with very few days out of country (maybe 10-15 days per year) for business travel and vacations combined. Time before becoming a PR counts half, so I could probably apply at the 2 yr 30 day mark of PR to get my 1095 days in case someone makes an issue of business travel or pleasure travel that takes me out of Canada.

From your response that nothing can speed up the application, is there a way to at least find out why it is taking so long? Seems everyone on this thread and even the inland applications 2013 thread will have landed by the time I get an answer. I don't want to keep applying for OWPs every two years and worry that at some point they will say no arbitrarily and force me to move back to the US without my Canadian-born wife.

Heck, I've seen other threads where conditional PR is given to people just living together. Seems unfair to me.

Sorry - I am just frustrated when I see posts by people who applied under family class in 2013 and landed in 2013, and who applied in 2014 and landed in 2014. What made theirs go so fast when I applied family class in March 2012 and am waiting though I provided everything they asked for in a timely manner?

The problem is that under the current rules for citizenship, you can use your pre-PR days as half days towards citizenship qualification. However starting next year, june/july timeframe, the new citizenship rule of 4 out of 6 year will go into effect. This new rule change also includes removal of using pre-PR days towards citizenship. Thus you will not be able to find a way to qualify for citizenship as early as 2 years after landing as PR. You will be following the 4 out of 6 year rule. The new change effect every PR regardless of when one landed. What matters is what the qualifications are at time of submitting for Canadian Citizenship application.

I don't blame you. There are still a few 2012 applicants that still haven't landed yet. So you are not alone in this journey.

Yes you're defenetly not alone I've. Found this lawyer who is part of the Canadian Immigration Board. I got her involved in my case 2 days ago and needless to say she's the best everyone kept telling me to go and see her although I pay $265 an hour for her services
