Despite what it says, people do report getting a SIN with just their passport and the COPR, even if they are not from a visa exempt country. This may be due to incorrect implementation by Service Canada personnel, but it does seem to be fairly common.

@screech
congratulations on receiving your landing date. My friend called CIC yesterday and they said they'd not change the October date until they clear all October applications. I hope for this waiting is two in one; AIP and DM at the same time

Hi Penna, Screech and everyone!

I wanted to know URL about the information which Penna found. Then I found this,

http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/about/publication/soc_ins_num_eng.shtml

Social Insurance Number December 2007
What documents must I provide?
If you are a permanent resident, provide one of the following documents issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada:

・Permanent Resident Card (this is the only acceptable document if you applied for your permanent residency from within Canada);
・Confirmation of Permanent Residence and Visa counterfoil (sticker) in foreign passport;
・Confirmation of Permanent Residence and Visa counterfoil on Single Journey Document for Resettlement in Canada;
・Confirmation of Permanent Residence and Visa counterfoil on United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Travel Document;
・Confirmation of Permanent Residence and Visa counterfoil on Red Cross Travel Document;
・Record of landing.

:( ??? I'm confused. So, CoPR is OK for getting SIN? Or NO?
Penna, could you tell us the URL you found?

Thanks Tomorisu. It is confusing...Maybe there was some changes from December 2007, maybe not...I am going to try on Tuesday afternoon (I get off earlier from work) I will let you know then if I was able to get it...But few people here did get it right away

I just got goosebumps. I can't imagine how hard I'll cry (tears of joy!) if I were to get AIP *and* DM at the same time! I'd freak out! And promptly book a trip to be there for my nephew's second b-day, since I missed his first.

Thanks for your reply, Screech, Computergeek and Penna.

However i do find it unfair that those who applied inland would have to wait for PR card to apply while those who came from outside Canada to be able to apply right away with just COPR. Doesn't make any sense.

I agree with Screech. If Service Canada doesn't accept Inlander's CoPR, it's unfair. Outlander can get their SIN easily after their landing and Inlander have to wait for PR card to get SIN? Then, Inlander cannot work until they get PR except they already have a temporary SIN? It's very ridiculous. :(

I hope Penna gets SIN without problem on Tuesday. :)

Have a good weekend!

You will need US passport to enter US. It is considered a felcony to enter US using other passports while being US citizen. I read a report that one person almost got charged for coming into US using a Canadian Passport while maintaining US citizenship (he is dual citizen). They let him go with a warning that next time he won't be so lucky. Only reason he was let go with warning was because he has been keeping up with his US tax filings, I believe, not 100% sure.

Oh, I meant, we will decide whether or not I will renounce my us citizenship)

As I was trying to rationalise the recent delay for AIP's... I am wondering if they mean the first 80% of the cases are processed each calendar year.. and the rest of us are the tail end of 2012. thoughts?

Tozo,

I have AIP on sept 2012 (H and C)
Ecas: APPlication sent to Mississauga Office Mar 2012

decision made, we will contact you

No medical, or police record done for me yet though, Is this pattern looking promisingly good??

@ Screech

Yea!!! It's JUNE!!!

I've been waiting for this month for so long as the CIC website mentioned the Processing Times on step 1 is 6 months. Hope we receive good news soon (even they are still working on the 8th October).

I have a question guys. My husband just got a new job last week. So I wonder if we need to update it to the CIC as well? Or just leave it.

Cheers!

@Deedeedar

I wish u the best but April is passed and I heard nothing. Don't keep your hopes too high lest you be very disappointed like me and the others before you

@jiggyzealous

Thanks for reminding me. If it won't come on time, I'm still happy because I can enjoy this summer. My uncle is coming to visit me from London, UK coz I can't leave Canada (been here more than 1 year and 8 months already).

@Deedeedar

It's good to remain hopeful. They can't keep processing the same applications forever. Maybe this week the rest of the October guys will get some news
