Hi @ SONIYAT

Can you please share update whether you have received Surrender certificate ,as i have submitted on 7th March 2024 @ BLS Ottawa and mine is showing " Processing at high Commission "
Please advise how much time they will take now a days

Can you login and check the status on https://portal3.passportindia.gov.in/Online/index.html
Select your application
Under ARN column, click Tack Application Status
What does the status showed ? does is show
SC has been granted and issued
or
Surrender certificate has been printed.

We went to BLS Brampton today for passport surrender certificate, the process was overall smooth since we took an appointment.

Does anyone know how crowded BLS Brampton gets during pick-up time? The agents mentioned there are usually 70 people in the line and they give out tokens for pick-up to only 25 people. Was it a tactic for us to pay for courier ($60 pp)?

Anyone has recent experience how bad it is during document pick-up (3-4 pm)?

Nice to find your thread. By today its been 8weeks on surrender application and no updates. How many days did it take exactly for you?? Even we have applied under Ottawa(MTL) region. Opted for pickup as well.

I have what seems to be an odd situation. I surrendered my Indian passport in 2010, received a cancelled stamp, but no certificate. I've since travelled to India on tourist visa without any issue, and the cancelled stamp has always sufficed. Now, for an OCI, I'm being asked to provide a surrender certificate.

Does anyone have experience navigating this kind of issue?

ndian passports of those acquiring foreign citizenship prior to 31 May 2010 used to be cancelled and no Surrender Certificate was issued. In case they wish to apply for OCI card then they need to show the proof of cancelled passport at the time of submission of OCI application.

The concept of issue of Surrender Certificate came into existence on 1 June 2010. As you have surrendered your Indian passport in 2014, you must have received the surrender certificate at that time.
In case you do not possess the surrender certificate as on date, you may send the scanned copy of your surrendered Indian passport for verification at this end.
It is mandatory to have surrender certificate after June 1, 2010 for applying for OCI. For OCI application only applicant need to submit surrender certificate.

Thanks for that info. I recognize those dates and I assure you: I did not receive a surrender certificate. I have a cancelled passport, however, and submitted the scanned passport pages with "Cancelled" clearly showing on multiple pages. Same process I followed for the tourist visa on multiple occasions.

What is the likely next step? Can I apply for a surrender certificate, even though the passport is cancelled?

I don't think you can get an SC now if you apply.
I think you can reach out to the HCI/CGI instead of BLS depending on your jurisdiction.

In my daughter's case, she received the SC (Nov 2022), but when we checked there was no cancelled stamp on her Indian passport. We as a family had submitted our SC applications together, for the rest of us SC was received and also the Indian passport had a cancelled stamp on it. So what we did was to add an Letter of Explanation along with our daughter's OCI application highlighting that the CGI missed including cancelled stamp on her passport

I submitted my Surrender application (walk-in) on April 19th 2024. It has been under review since then.
Is the HCI Ottawa processing time for surrender applications still around 8 weeks ?
