Applied for my passport renewal on Oct 2nd and it still says "processing at consolate general". It has been 3 full business weeks and I see no update. Need some assistance - what should be done here?

Hi @Nash_jam, I submitted my passport renewal application at BLS Ottawa on 9th October. I received notification of initiation of police verification on 21st October and I had a police officer visiting home to complete verification on 2nd November.
My passport application status is stuck at "Passport application is under review at Indian Embassy/Consulate" since then.

I was wondering how long was your status stuck at this stage and when did you eventually receive your passport. Please share your experience.

Police verification was completed on 2nd Nov. Application status says its being reveiwed at indian embassy or consulate.
Is there an email id to request an update? I am a little desperate as I need to travel to India for personal reasons, my tickets are already booked for 11 December .

Yeah, they are really slow, we had submitted on Sep-28 - though passport.gov.in says it has been handed over to OSP on 3-Nov but still on BLS website the status remains processing at HC

I tried checking passport.gov.in and did not see a tracking option. Could you share the link where you are checking your status?

Hey Guys, see police verification is happening almost everytime. What if nobody lives at that home address and has no relatives who live close by to verify the address?

I thought there is another place you are checking your status that may give more details.

Oh, btw - finally we go the passport - so it took almost 7 weeks to get the passport back after submission. Hope this helps.

Congratulations buddy, good to know that you got your passport.

My application would complete 7 weeks on 27 November. It looks unlikely that I will get my passport by then as the status still says that application is under review at Indian Embassy.
The passport has not even been sent for printing yet.

I have tickets to fly to India on 11th December. I really hope the passport is delivered in time for me to not have to reschedule the trip.

I have written an email to Indian Consulate in Ottawa explaining my situation and requesting to expedite the process if necessary. Not sure of this will help at all, but I did not want to left wondering the 'WHAT IFs' at the end of the day.

Hey Guys, see police verification is happening almost everytime. What if nobody lives at that home address and has no relatives who live close by to verify the address?

1. Your explanation of the situation indicates that the given address is not genuinely the address of permanent residence. In this case, I would advise against using this address.

2. If the trouble is that all your documents have this address but your family has moved to a different location for which you don't have any documents in your name, then the most obvious thing is to get address updated on some of your govt identification docs. This is easier said than done as this too would require some form of proof of address docs.
My situation was similar and this is what I did:-
Open a joint bank account with the new address. While most banks wont do this without a document to prove address, ICICI bank has the option of their executive visiting your home and opening an account using that address based on the visit and one account holder being able to provide a proof of address document. Once account is opened, you would be able to procure a passbook with the address and your photo. This passbook can then be used to update address on any of govt ID.
Note: In my case, I did this an year ago during my last India visit and updated address on my Aadhaar card using the passbook. I am now using the Aadhaar card to apply for passport renewal with the new address.

3. If you are unable to procure a document that proves residential address, then the I guess you can try to find the officer who is responsible to passport verification at the concerned police station, visit the police station and bribe your way through before someone visits the address for verification. Needless to say, this isn't a sure shot way and of course a lot can go wrong. But your situation calls for such desperate measures and some plain good luck.
Based on what I have heard, this option is commonly used by people residing in rural India.
My advise though is not go this route as it is illegal and super risky.

@sunil238 thanks for the info. So the address is genuine. I am just renewing the passport, and it has the same address as that of old passport. I don't think the primary address on the passport renewal app has to be the address of permanent residence. I still have Indian citizenship & that address is my home when I go there. All other official documents have that address as well. Currently, I am not in India, and no family member is living at that address & can't travel due to Covid.
