Indian Citizen Surname Change

Hello Everyone,

Apologies for long post.

I'm bit confused about the process here. My wife hasn't changed her surname after marriage still carries her father's surname. We have been married for few years. We are PR in Ontario.
Now soon she is going to be eligible for Canadian citizenship, but we would like to change her surname.
If we change before applying for Canadian citizenship then, we have renew her current Indian passport plus PR card, once we get that then we can apply for Canadian citizenship with new name.
Other option is we apply as it is and then change the surname after getting Canadian citizenship. But that might cause issues with OCI card later.

Also she has same name in all her qualification documents.

Example of what we want;
Current name: Alice Green( Green-- father's surname)
What we want: Alice Warne( Warne--husband's surname)

Can someone please guide or share their experience and knowledge here.

Couple of folks I know personally have done the legal name change after acquiring Canadian citizenship.

• One individual had to shorten his name
• The other individual wanted space out there name since the given name was having both the given and family name together.

They went through the Ontario ministry and they included the name change certificate issued by the Ministry for the SC and OCI process

Thanks for the info. Did they apply for name change immediately after getting citizenship certificate? Then get the Canadian passport with new name and apply for SC and OCI?? Awaiting to hear from you. Maybe we can share our experiences as we go through the process.

One of them did apply for name changes after he became Canadian citizen, after he got the name change certificate he applied for Canadian passport
