In person passport application and identification documents

If you go to a Passport Canada location to submit your passport application in person, do they inspect and return original identification documents immediately or are they returned with your Canadian passport once it is ready. I see the alternative is to have the guarantor sign photocopies but I just wanted to see if this was necessary or not.
