Importing car from US

I have a US car that I temporarily imported to Ontario by way of my work permit. However, I recently received my COPR and am looking to land in Canada with my car and import it fully. Has anyone on this forum been in this situation? My concerns are as follows:

- Service Ontario is holding on to my original title
- If I want my title back, I need to give Service Ontario my Ontario plates, at which point I need to drive on my older US plates (state of Georgia)
- My Georgia registration is expired. I don't know if that means I can't drive it in a different state though. I literally need to drive it to the border, turn around and export it, and then import it.

Needless to say, I'm super confused. ANY help is appreciated. Even a contact.

Thanks!

i would suggest calling the RIV and finding out how to handle the situation, the agents are very helpful. i am not familiar with transferring a temp import to a permanent one. you will need to submit your title to the us border office before the export.

The title is not submitted in the border. The CBSA verifies ownership of the car from the title and if it is clear, the stamp a seal saying "Allowed to be exported". This stamped title (along with safety, emission and other docs and appropriate fees) needs to be submitted in Service Ontario to get the Ontario title and plates.

are you specifically speaking about transferring a temporary import to a permanent one? because that's certainly not true for initiating a permanent import. the EXPORT starts on the US side and it is required to submit the title 72 hours in advance to the US border, not CBSA - which is canadian.

Am referring here to the permanent movement. I had mistyped as CBSA inside of US customs and border protection. Yes, you send a soft-copy of your title 72 hours prior to your arrival but you do not hand over the actual title at the US border. They just verify the ownership and put a stamp on your US car title saying it is allowed to be exported. You hand it over at the Service Ontario for getting the Ontario title.

Thanks for all your responses. I've been obsessing over this and have found out the following:

1- According to Canada Border Services (Federal), the car was temporarily imported to Canada
2- However, when I took my car to Service Ontario to get temporary Ontario plates, Service Ontario took my US Title and gave me an Ontario title in exchange. Now, I CANNOT get my US Title back
3- Therefore, I do not have a US title, and no way to prove to the US that this car is a car originating from the US on a temporary export.

I feel super screwed. Has anyone been in this situation? Can anyone help?

it's really going to depend on the border office the export is done through. technically, the original title is required, however many border offices will accept a copy of the title instead. the exporter needs to be prepared to give the original title, not just a copy.

My advise is to call the RIV. They may be able to walk you through how to get it transferred to a permanent import. it may not be necessary to have the US title...

I never said that the original title is not required. You cannot do anything without the original title. What I meant is 72 hours prior to your arrival, you can just mail them your soft copy of your title, but when you are actually crossing the border (72 hours later), you definitely need to present the original title. In fact they stamp on the original title which is subsequently handed over to Service Ontario to get your Ontario title.
