Dear All

If i land in canada with wife being pregnant - we will first get SIN card.

Will this SIN card cover all of our health expenses, including doctor, hospital, medicines etc ?

Suppose we have to deliver baby Before we get PR card -- Can we avail the free of cost health care on the basis of our SIN card ?

I think no, because health benefits starts after 3 months, but you can have an insurance before landing that will cover all expenses

No, land in provinces such as Alberta, apply for health card and you will be immediately covered with healthcare. Check with the relevant government departments if they cover medicine as well.

SIN is more related to employment and income tax related matters.

Hi,

If you are planning to land in Ontario and some other provinces then the healthcare will start after 3 months of landing but if you land in CAlberta healthcare will start from day 1 . You need to apply for Alberta health card in person at any registry which takes around 2 weeks to arrive but if you do any healthcare expenses before arrival of card you can get them reimbursed by Alberta health afterwards.

You need to understand that you are eligible for free healthcare from Alberta healthcare if you are going to reside in Canada permanantly (atleast 6 months in an year) but if you are landing just for delivery of your baby and then leaving back to your home country you might have to face some problems in future.

Land in Alberta , have baby there , give best try to settle your life. Even if you moved to some other prov after 6 month staying in Alberta then you will be covered for 3 month by alberta ins during new prov waiting period but if you moved early then 6 month then you have to had 3 month waiting period in new prov again .

Some people say if you just land Alberta for free maternity then its may cause problem. But if you stay 6 month then no problem .

Check the below thread for temporary health insurance cover OR as other member suggested to land in the province where you got early Health card.

Ok Thanks everyone for the replies

What i conclude is that i can only get healthcare free in Alberta from day 1.

But i will enter and stay in Toronto - so my best choice is to get Travel insurance from home country or after i land in Canada ?

Will travel insurance cover maternity medical costs ?

Also advise which International travel insurance is reputable and will work in Canada ?

Thanks

No private Heath insurance will cover maternity and child birth.
They will only cover emergency upto 32 weeks (max) .
Don't trust insurance agent what ever they say.

Ask them to give you in written in policy documents that "they will be paying for all maternity related insurance, including anti natal care , c-section , forcips and normal vaginal child birth ".

If they can write this means they will cover , I dougbt you will get this for less then $ 10,000 premium.

In short it's advisable to land anywhere else except Alberta and Qubec if you landing at least 5 month before due date , or 4 month before due date in BC. As then your medical will start min 2 month before your due date , some good insurance cover maternity upto 32 week but again they will cost you around 1200-1500$ for 3 month waiting time .

Hi Sarimraza,

Your best move is to get in touch with the Access Alliance Community Health Centre and the Scarborough Clinic for the Uninsured. Both are located in the Toronto region. They can provide primary care for a family during the first 3 months you are without OHIP. The care is provided free of charge. Also they can help make arrangements with hospitals and other specialists.

Access Alliance's phone number is 416-693-8677. The Scarborough Clinic for the Uninsured is 416-264-4446. Both are excellent resources for new Canadians who are without OHIP.

I hope this is a help to you!
