I need help for my wife. I am sponsoring her for Immigration and we just received a request from Immigration Canada for a valid passport or travel document. My wife lives with me in Canada. Her passport expired during the immigration process. Her student visa is expired. In order to get a new valid passport from the Chinese embassy, they need valid student or work visa. When she applied for PR, we included (IMM 5710) Application To Change Conditions, Extend my Stay or Remain in Canada as a Worker applying for a work visa. This application has obviously not been processed yet. What can we do in order to get a valid passport? I noticed in the letter, it says to have a valid passport, travel document, or an explanation as to why a valid passport can't be produced sent in by 10/11/2018. Does she absolutely need a valid passport in order to continue the immigration process for PR or is this explanation of the chicken and the egg scenario were in all that is necessary.

She does need a valid passport. They wont stamp an expired one. It is quite clear on the documents that it is required. The permit extension im sure shouldnt have been sent with pr application rather to the address they indicete... for example visitor extensions go to another cpc.

What can we do from here? I've been trying to call Immigration Canada but the lines are so busy they can't transfer us to an agent. There is no way we can produced a valid passport in under 30 days. Will we have to do the whole process all over again? Why do they allow us to use a expired passport to do medical exam and to apply if a valid passport is required? It seems like were at a dead end here. Game over. Were freaking out.

Probably because for most countries out there, getting a new passport is as simple as going to an embassy or a consulate, paying the fees, and you have your brand new passport within a few weeks.

My assumption is they allow medicals with expired passports (though this is the first I've heard of it and I didn't think it was possible) because you're probably already working on (or are supposed to be) on getting a new one and they don't wanna delay the process by denying you the medical exam in the meantime.

The passport is probably the single most important document in this process. It absolutely has to be valid.

I know that it's possible to get an extension when you can't produce required documents in the amount of time they give you. You do have to contact them for that and also fill out that form online that's used for that. I've never had to do it so it would be best to wait for replies from people who have.
