Hello,

I am a Canadian Citizen and my boyfriend is Australian. We have both lived together in Canada for 5 years and have been in a common-law relationship for 7 years. We are applying for common-law PR and I am going to sponsor him. However, the waiting time to apply inland is 26 months!!!! That's crazy. If we apply outland to the Sydney Australia office the waiting time is cut in half to about 12 months. Since we both live together in Canada and we both have careers in Canada, can we apply outland to the Sydney Australia office?

Thank you.

Yes you can! Use your regular address and everything, even though it's a Canadian address and you're applying outland it's fine. Send it to Mississauga as instructed in the guide and they'll send it to Sydney.

Thank you for your response. That would be amazing to apply outland in Sydney Australia since they have the shortest wait time at the moment. I guess the only downside is if they require an interview then my boyfriend needs to fly from Canada to Australia to attend the interview. If the interview is requested, do you know if I would have to attend as well, or just him?

Thank you!

Only the applicant has to attend an interview for an outland application. With a lot of evidence of your relationship and the length of it, there will most likely not be an interview. Interviews are called when the visa officer suspects that the relationship is not genuine, or when he or she has questions or concerns. In addition, applicants from first-world countries are far less likely to arouse suspicion, so all in all I would guess there will not be an interview.

Thank you for your response. That is great to know. I don't think we should have any issues since we have 7 years of bank statements, credit cards together, rental agreements and purchased a place together two years ago. We also fill our taxes together as common law partners and are on each other's company benefits and extended health plans as common law partners. Fingers cross, we are sending the application to immigration in 2 weeks.

You can also check out the Sydney thread and timeline. I believe some are getting through even faster at 5-6 months total. Check out this spreadsheet to get an idea of timelines:https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1FAYZyQgud1lzp7fM28i2O8ZrfbMAxdTc_t7_fiwI6ak/edit#gid=658388151
