IEC visa issued for 5 months instead of 24 months

Hi There,

I am Australian and was approved my second IEC (my first was in 2014). I received my POE in February and when I crossed the boarder today I was granted a visa until Feb 2017, rather than for 24 months as I was expecting. The officer advised that the validity date was the length of the visa, rather than the 12 months I have to enter Canada. Does anyone know if this is correct and how to appeal?

I was also charged $155 to get my permit issued, which was not done before and not something I can see online under the fees second of IEC so I'm looking for clarification on this and hopefully a way of getting reimbursed.

Thanks

Firstly what is the expiry date on your passport ? Second did you have 24 months travel insurance ? Third the 155 cdn fee sounds like the fee for issuing a standard work permit wheras the IEC is all paid up front before the POE is issued http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/fees/fees.asp

Sounds like you have come across a CBSA officer who has got somewhat confused so need to contact CIC not sure what the number is but in hindsight would have been easier to have sorted out before you left the airport.

Someone else on here may be able to help with a number to call but also raise a case specific enquiry asap.

Thank you.

My passport expires in 2021. I had 12months insurance with me, but she never asked to look at it. I was at the Windsor land boarder crossing and it seemed no-one was sure of what to do.

I'll search for the number for CIC

I know of people who have gone back to the border and had it re-issued.

I caught mine when they did it on the day and had the printout from the website stating 24 months, they re-did mine no problem.

this might be an option given the OP has obviously come across a CBSA officer either new or incompetent as the POE validity for sure is not the work permit validity which should be pretty obvious on their system. Maybe the OP can call CIC or go do a flagpole (not at Windsor though ) with all paperwork at the border to try and sort it out, maybe down to the Niagara border where they are used to processing Permits.

Thanks for the responses.

I had the border call me the next day to refund the permit issue fee that they charged. I asked if I could come back to sort out the time and was told once landed to deal directly with CIC. I queried the time frame given when I was still at the border, but she wouldn't look at changing the date.

When I called CIC, they also said to submit a case specific enquiry online, which I have done and sent my docs to a processing centre in Alberta. From what I can see online it will be about a month processing time.

Hi Kaithlyn,

I just wanted to check if you managed to get a resolution on this or if you have any updates? I went through the same thing (refer my recent post) and I had to send my paperwork off to a processing centre in Ottowa. I had to return to Oz as my SIN expired along with my work permit in April 2016 (I was only given 10 months from activation and not 24 months). Given I have lost some 6 months now trying to sort it I am hoping they will issue me another 12 months but I doubt that.

Any way if you managed to sort anything out please let me know as it sounds like we are in the same boat.

Thanks.
