I may get married while waiting for my citizenship, do I need to inform CIC?

Dear friends,

My citizenship application is currently in process, while waiting for my application, I may go back to my home country and get married there.

Do I need to inform CIC once I get married before my citizenship is granted? Is there any official CIC guideline talking about this? I would like to avoid unnecessary updates to CIC in order not to incur extra delays in my application.

Thank you!

No you don't need to.

What matters in the citizenship process is the 4 years before the date on which you signed the forms, that's all.

Yes Yes Yes You need to inform CIC of any change in the information you provided in your application.
Please read the last part of the application form, the declaration you signed.

???

I have a brother who -after he sent his application- graduated from school, got a job (i.e. no longer a student), got married, had a child and still his application was processed in 18 months without getting RQed.

All what matters is providing the correct info about yourself for the 4 years that precede the date on which you signed the application. CIC doesn't care about what occurs afterwards.

Thanks guys for your comment! Sounds like you two have different opinions.

What I care most is whether such an update would cause significant delay in my application, or/and increase the chance of being RQed. That's why I would like to avoid it unless it is required by law.

Personally I think Pureminded does have a point though. If any information change would mean an update, people would need to inform CIC if they change their jobs or even get promoted in their current jobs, which sounds very weird to me.

How long would be be out of the country, when you go to get married? If a week, maybe not an issue, but if longer, how would you know when they send you the test or oath letter? If you don't respond, that may delay the application, even RQ'ed. If you have a friend who can check your email and let you know, and you can get back in time than perhaps you dont need to let CIC I know.

On the other hand if you are going for a longer period, you may want to let CIC know, so they know that you will not be able to attend the test/oath because you are out of the country. Of course, that might also delay the application.....:(.

If you are going to stay outside Canada for long time (more than two weeks), you have to inform CIC. Any way, inform them that you arr getting married.

Congrats!

Thanks Ray. I will only be out of country for just about 10 days to get married since I have a job here in Canada. So if I get married but will only travel a few days outside the country, is it still necessary to inform CIC about my marital status change?

Hard to answer the question. Legally, I dont know if you are required to tell CIC, maybe you can call and ask. What I would be more concerned about is if you get the test/oath date while you are out of the country and miss the date. What happens then? Would it be better to tell CIC upfront? Unfortunately, I don't know the answer. CIC sometimes doesn't have clear answers, which causes stress like this...:(

BTW, congratulations on getting married.

Nope you don't unless you change your legal name, charged with a crime or changed your address. I hope this helps.
