How should we do this?

I know some of the basics, but what we are coming down to is this. I'm 20 and my fiance is turning 18 on the 31st of August. We are getting married here in the states on September 1st. (Yeah, I know it's a little odd, but vacation times for relatives worked that way.)

Can he send his sponsorship papers before his birthday?

Are we going to be able to cross the boarder if we don't have any of the papers started but we are married?

Do my papers have to be filed before I go to Canada or are just his ok if I can mail mine before we leave?

Do we have to tell customs that we are married and what will they ask?

Will I need a new passport and all that before we leave?

We plan to drive home to Canada after the wedding, take about a week and stop places on the way... He is driving down here for the wedding so I will be with him in his car. If it makes a difference I could fly in from Seattle by myself.

Tell me where to look or what to do or who to call! Thanks. :)

There is no legal relationship that qualifies him to be sponsored by you until you are married so you must be married before you fill out your application. He must have a passport when you submit the application. He must take a physical from a designated medical doctor and submit the proper forms with your application. He must have an FBI police check done. Go to the CIC website and read....read....read...read... There is lots to consider and to do before you are ready to submit your application. If you are married and trying to cross the border, they will probably not allow him to enter. They will be concerned that he will not return to the states. Once you submit your application, (if it is an outland process) he will be able to come and go on visits.

Thank you for your help!!

Actually, it's me that will be entering Canada. I have a US passport - but will I need to change it because of the name change, before I enter Canada after the wedding?

If we file inland, do I still need to have my Police Records and Physical done etc? (If we were to go inland route, we would get the marriage license in Canada.)

In Canada, legal age is 19 years old. He may not be eligible to sponsor you. You really need to check that out before you make your plans or submit documents or fees.

No, you have to be 18 to sponsor.

If you chose to do an inland process, you will actually prolong the application process. Yes, you will still be required to have a medical check done and also an FBI check. If you are living in Canada, they will want to do an additional police check for Canada. The entire process of an inland application could take over a year.

Best wishes!!
