Hi everyone. My husband is migrating into Canada in a few days. We are both wondering where the Canada border services agency will stop to ask him questions. Will it be his very first stop in Canada or his final destination stop (where we are living). He has two stops in Canada. One as a layover and the last one (city which he’s migrating to). Which stop is it that the border services will ask him the questions and sign his PR??
One last question. My husband is currently unemployed and I , as well as my parents are supporting him (like we stated on the sponsorship papers). This means he doesn’t have much savings at all to support himself. Will the border services cause any problems if they see he doesn’t have the means to support himself? Will they be okay if he shows them a letter from me stating I am his supporter as well as my work paystubs. I assume they won’t cause any problem because on our sponsorship papers we said he wouldn’t support himself for a while and that I would be.
Thanks so much for reading through and helping me!!

As you are sponsoring you’re spouse you have already committed to support him financially for at least 3 years so this should not be an issue given very few people arrive straight into a job so is not unusual scenario .

As above he would complete immigration and customs at the first entry point into Canada so should ensure a minimum 3 hour connection. If a Service Canada desk available at the connection airport he could collect his SIN if time,

Advice with CBSA is to only answer questions asked and only present documents asked for such as passport, COPR , customs declaration plus a Canadian address for the PR card. If they want to see anything else they will ask so no need to offer anything not asked for.

Thank you so much for your reply. My only concern is that his first stop in Edmonton is only 1 hour and 50 min layover until his next flight to final destination. Not 3 hours. :(

Landing interview normally takes long time to line up, less than 2 hr time is not enough. I had same situation and what's worse I was taking my four pets with me in the line, and begging every single person to kindly let me cut in the line, cos I don't have enough time to catch my next flight. Unfortunately nobody willing to let me, my poor pets, I almost had panic attack at the airport and missed my next flight.

*Please consider to change his next flight.*

Thanks for the warning, we will consider plan B. If my husband misses his flight to the final destination due to the interview questioning will the airline get him a new ticket / get him on the next flight for free???? Or would he have to buy it new ???

my husband is also wondering, where are the CBSA officers when you land in Canada. Are they the same officers at the customs area? Or does he have to go to a different place in the airport to locate them.
thanks again everyone.

Regarding the flights, that's up to your airline. Some may not put him on the next flight, or some may make him wait until the next day or longer.

At the airport, he will either fill out a form or use a computer kiosk to make an initial declaration when he enters the country. One CBSA officer will ask basic questions, he should be clear to tell them he is a PR and is landing. They will forward him to the immigration officers.

My airline was Air Canada, when I reached their desk after inspection there was only 10 mins to departure but they said I still able to get on the flight without my pets. (Since you need to pick up your claimed luggage and checked them again even my initial flight and the next one are both Air Canada). I chose not to get on the flight and be with my pets, they offered to change my flight to the next one without any extra costs but I have to stay over night at the airport.

When he land in Canada, he will have to go through the first border inspection and tell the officer he's PR and here for landing, then the official will make a visible note (mine was a huge purple "X" mark) on his declaration card, when he pass through the first inspection, when the officer at the exit sees the mark on his declaration card, will show him the way to the second inspection/immigration inspection room to line up for landing interview. At Toronto airport, sometimes if he's lucky there is an officer will check the line and asking "is anyone here for immigration landing", then he can go with that officer to cut the line to go to the immigration desk directly and quicker. If not, he will have to wait. Every inspection is pretty slow about 10-20 mins per person in the secondary inspection.

Hope this message will help you.

Thank you so much for this detailed reply!!!! I really appreciate your efforts. One last thing I just wanted to clear up for peace of mind. Instead of booking a one way ticket to Canada since he’s a PR now, my husband booked a two way since it was a cheaper price. Meaning to Canada then back to his country of origin after two months. He will not be going back home though, he said he’d just cancel the return flight. Will this be okay or cause problems with the border service officer when signing his PR?

Yes, since he is already a permanent resident, the border officer will unlikely ask him common question such as how long will you stay?

And I don’t think Edmonton airport will be as busy as Toronto.

Good luck!

If u have time call your airline in advance and explain the situation. They may change it for you free of charge given the circumstances. It definitely wont hurt to ask. That way you'll have a peace of mind
