I have booked a flight which has the following route :

Air India : Delhi Terminal 3 > London Heathrow Terminal 4 (stopover of 5 hours)
Air Canada : London Heathrow Terminal 3 > Ottawa

Now i have a doubt regarding the checked baggage (2 pieces of 23 kgs)

Do we need to reclaim the luggage after landing at London Heathrow
OR
There is a possibility where the baggage is Through Checked-In (where the baggage reaches the final destination and there is no need to pick it up at London Heathrow)

How to Through Check-In the luggage directly to Ottawa.

And if i need to re claim it at London Heathrow Terminal 4, then what is the right way for it (do i need to clear the customs in this case)

Any senior who has travelled through the same route, kindly help and guide through the right process.

Will be highly grateful !!!

From personal experience, you have to make sure that when you check in you explicitly tell the person checking you in that you want the baggage checked all the way to Ottawa. Then when he prints the label to put on the 2 pieces of luggage, check them again to make sure they have Ottawa as the final destination. If they don't do this then you may need a transit visa as your luggage will surface at Heathrow meaning that you'll need to clear immigration to get it before re-checking it again with your next flight which may cause you unncessesary delays and hassle to your trip.

Mead and theoptimist : Thanks a ton guys ;D you made my day !!!!

I was so tensed due to this ....

So finally as suggested, will clearly instruct the counter person to through check in the luggage directly to Ottawa and not to London.

Since i have booked the complete package and not separately, i think they'll definitely make it happen ...

And if they they deny to through check-in till final destination, i will be in deep trouble of transit visa and customs shit !!!

Anyways lets see what happens at the counter then :-[

Thanks a lot guys for the help .....

when are you going rahul_new???

Haha no problem. And don't worry, they won't refuse to check in the luggage till the final destination...if they do, demand to speak to the manager and after he checks in the bags demand business class seats :P

Hi rahul_new.
Can u share ur experience of your last year flight:
Air India : Delhi Terminal 3 > London Heathrow Terminal 4 (stopover of 5 hours)
Air Canada : London Heathrow Terminal 3 > Ottawa

As I am also having similar itinerary : Air India :Delhi T3> LHR(T4) (layover of 4h 45 min), Air Canada: LHR T3>YYZ(toronto).

Can you tell me did Air India check your luggage through to your final destination.
And at LHR will there be any problem in Customs and immigration?

You also want to check which airline it is you fly with first. If you booked with one airline who is generous with weight but the first flight you board is operated by another carrier THEIR LUGGAGE RULES apply across all your flights.

Id like to add that some airline allow students to carry more weight in their luggage and you have to notify them in advance , has anyone done something like this?

I have a question similar to this forum topic.. my flight is from chennai > sri lanka > heathrow > toronto... I have a 12 hour lay over at heathrow.. I plan to exit the airport for a few hours.. what happens to my luggage which I will through check in ? what do I need to do when I step out from the flight ? also do I need a transit visa if im stepping out of the airport ? I have a canadian PR
