Last month I got full G license in my first attempt, with DriveTest, Guelph, Ontario.

Here are few points for new immigrants who already have driving licenses from their residence countries:

1. Bring the experience letter from your country duly attested. I have Dubai license, so I arranged letter from RTA duly attested by Ministry of Foreign Affairs

2. You need to show your original license too

3. You will have only one chance to pass G license, if failed then go back to G2 test. So be careful

4. In Ontario, G test is not at all easy. Its duration is 30 min but you should know Canadian driving techniques. There are -mostly- no right turning exclusive lanes in GTA/Toronto (whereas in UAE they have separate right-turning lanes, you cant turn to right from signal). Few signals in Toronto have no exclusive left-turning signals, so you have to wait for incoming traffic before turning left. Learn parallel parking, three point turn, emergency/uphill/downhill parking, and lane changing techniques seriously. Follow speed limit sign boards religiously while taking the test. With these differences, be careful while taking G test.

5. It is in your best interest to take 3-4 practice classes before going for G test

6. Driving Instructors, mostly Indians or Pakistanis, are same as they are in their home countries. You know what I mean, so be careful. They will try to make money out of you. An hour long class with driving instructor is costing $25, so manage your instructor with ease.

7. On the day of test, you need a car too. So same instructor will take you to test place in his/her same car but you need to pay extra i.e. around $75-$100 for that day, plus you have to pay G license test fee that is $95. Its all money so be careful while taking test, its costly affair.

8. Full G license cost me around $400 inclusive of 4 classes ( @ $23 per class) from a very good instructor including all fee (G1($85) & G test($95) fees) along with car ($130) on the day of test, as I went to Guelph Test Drive center, some 100Km away from Toronto.

3. Is it advantageous in some way to take driving school car on the test day rather than any private car !

Really scary..so long 30 min test..here in Dubai i gave max 10 min test..and failing can put us in trouble..it seems to be very expensive affair.

How to obtain Ontario Driving License
with our Home Country's D/License

Step-1 -Before we 'Land':
1. We must obtain a 'Letter of Authentication'* from the country's Roads & Transport Authority, explaining** our D/License.
2. Take also a 'True Translation Copy'* of our D/License from Road & Transport Authority. Both 1 & 2 maybe clubbed in one.
3. Obtain an International Driving License/Permit*** (IDL / IDP).
stating "more than 24 months" driving experience in our country.
*In English or French, the 2 Canadian Official Languages.
**The explanation should include 24 or 12 months driving experience [the Pre-conditions will apply].
***This is nothing but a translated copy of our present D/license. (it can be used in lieu of point-1 & 2 above).

Hi qorax! i just want to clarify the requirements here, im from the philippines and will be landing in TO feb.2014. i am processing all the documents that i need when i land there and one of these are my drivers license docs. so just to clarify, as far as i understand,

1. a certificate of your years of driving experience
2. i guess i dont need that anymore coz the certificate is issued in english
3. is this my current drivers license (which is also in english) or i need to get an 'International drivers license' which is different from my current one right now?

if this doesn't need to be an international drivers license, will this should be valid? coz mine will be expiring this May2014.

Hi Seniors,

I have a question regarding the experience letter from RTA. I have fine and four black points in October'13. This is the only driving fine which I have in 5 years of driving in Dubai which was not due to the serious mistake but I was unfortunate that my friend interfered when I was talking the policeman and he got angry and gave me 4 black points with AED 400 fine...
Anyhow can I get an experience letter from RTA inspite of these black points or I have to wait till October when these points will be removed from my license. If some with black points had this letter then please let me know..

Hello friends:

My wife has driving license for a long time. We could not take the authentication letter for her as she got the license from a different state in India and our local RTO (road transport office) is saying that they can't help unless she submits the NOC (No objection certificate) from her home state.

I read on mto.gov.on.ca site that without any proof she can claim for a maximum of 12 month experience. With this, is she eligible to take the tests for G2 license?

Also, how to arrange the car for driving test? Can I use rental car (rented on international driving license)?

I had 4 black points as well but had no problem registering for the test in Ontario with the letter.

I live in Qatar and to get driving experience letter from here is very easy. Tell your friend to log on to Metrash2 (Ministry of Interior website) through his mobile phone since Metrash2 is a web based application for mobile phones only. Press Traffic tab, then Traffic Certificate tab and then Driving License Certificate tab. Charges are QAR 10 and payable by debit or credit card. That's all. The next minute, the certificate will be in his inbox.

If your friend face any problems, tell him to PM me. I will be glad enough to help him.
