For renting, it depends what city where you are moving.

I haven't landed in Canada yet, but I did try to search online for some rough estimates. The two websites I referred were Numbeo and Expatistan. For a couple without children, probably CAD 3,000 to CAD 4,000 a month for comfortable living including house rent, internet, transportation, groceries, eating out, some entertainment.

With children, it's going to cost additional for school fees and some other things (that I admit I don't know because I haven't researched those in detail; I don't have any children yet and don't plan on having any in the next few years).

We are a family of 3 living in Ontario. Following is the breakup of our monthly expenses:

1. Rent - $1200
2. Groceries - $600
3. Car parking and insurance - $350
4. Internet, phone & cable - $250
5. Child care - $350
6. Transportation and fuel - $300

Total - $3050

That seems low for rent (and utilities if required) and childcare although depends where you live and whether you need full-time childcare.

I don't live in the greater Toronto area. And I don't need full time child care.
