Hi All,

I am planning to move to Canada (Ottawa or Vancouver). I am PR and want to know a rough idea about the expense.
I am planning to stay in sharing and will target to get a survival Job asap.

1. the rough idea of monthly expense.
2. How difficult it will be to get Survival job and approx how much time will it take to get one.
3. is 5K CADs are good for surviving 3-4 months without getting any job (in case I didn't get any job)

Expenses can vary depending on rent and what you spend on, if you get a car, etc. Are you by yourself? If you are alone and get 1 or 2 roommates to share rent, you PROBABLY can get by on $1000/month but it is very much a stretch and really depends on how cheap rent you can get. If you are with a family, you probably will need at least $2000-$3000/month. The $5k CAD will be ok for 3 months if you are by yourself, MAYBE 4 months.

You will have many unexpected expenses. It is highly doubtful that you could get by on $5k for 3-4 months

I would suggest a budget, single person of at least 2k per month, and that will be tight. Add about $500 - 700 per month per person minimum.

Good luck.

$5000 for Vancouver will be gone in no time.. Even $2000..unless you are prepared to stay in a hell hole. See here, and that is only rent: https://vancouver.craigslist.ca/search/hhh?hasPic=1&min_price=100&max_price=700&availabilityMode=0

You can find reasonable rent in Ottawa. I think you will be ok. It's tight but as long as you stick with necessities until you find a job you are ok. Honestly the $5000 CAD is a stretch for 4 months but this is assuming you don't find work. Most likely you will find work sooner than that and you will be ok.

What type of education do you have? Any work experience? Work in Canada is not segregated based on gender and while gender equality is still not perfect a female can apply for and get the same job a male would.

Even if you end up working minimum wage, you will be ok for a little while until you can find the job you qualify for. Consider looking for a small studio (smaller than a 1 bedroom apartment) to save on rent if you cannot find a roommate.

Security deposit is most cases is 1 month. If you do not have a rental history, it can sometimes be 2 or 3 months.

Food is definitely the next major expense after accommodation.

Primarily SIN and secondarily Bank Account (once you have job) without which you can't reap the benefit of the job.

It is highly illegal to ask for more than one month rent.. BC and Ontario law is very clear on that!

Thanks a lot everyone for clearing my doubts:
So, what are the pre-requisite for opening a bank account.
And what will you suggest shall I convert the currency in CADs and take whole money with me and once I reach there I will open back account and deposit money in my account??

(I dont have much money only 6-7K as per CAD $)

As a newcomer you are allowed a checking account without any prior history and usually you get free benefits. TD gives you 6 months free checking and an unsecured Credit Card as a newcomer. Yes convert the money to CAD and deposit it into the account.

It possibly can be, but as a newcomer (without any history), not sure how many are willing to fight it out. I went through a (authorized) broker and still they demanded up to 3 months rent. Since I had the luxury of time, I waited until a found a landlord who demanded just 1 month. I do not disagree on the law but the reality always does not goes by the law.

You can open a bank account online even before you land and transfer money directly into it. You need your COPR for that.
